This Company has been formed with the object of laying a line of Tramway from Hokitika to Greymouth for the conveyance of passengers and goods to and from those places and the various intermediate stations. The Company have much satisfaction in , stating that permission has been granted to them by the Provincial Government, to take possession of any land within five (5) chains of high water mark, that may be required for laying their permanent way ; and the construction of the work having already been commenced and proceeded with a considerable distance, there is every probability of the line being completed as far as the Arahura, before the end of the 'present year and throughout within a very short period afterwards. From careful calculations that have been made, the present passenger and goods weekly trailic, between Hokitika and the Waimea, is estimated at 120 tons of goods and 500 passengers each wwar.3 r . From this it is deduced that 120 tons of loading, at L 2 per ton (being half of the present carriage), will give a revenue of L2lO per week. The passenger traffic, which is at present estimated at 500 per week each way, would also furnish a considerable revenue, as at 2s 6d each it would realise L 125 weekly, and it might be reasonably anticipated that the number of passengers will at least be trebled soon after the line is opened. It might also be fairly anticipated that the goods traffic would increase immensely, inasmuch as the risk now felt in transmitting property from ons place to the other would be almost entirely avoided, and the cost very much reduced. Other sources of revenue will arise from the carriage of mails, parcels, and newspapers, and also the supply of timber, shingle, and other materials that will be required for town improvements. The Company have already entered into a contract for the completion of the line of Tramway to the Arahura River, and propose issuing one thousand(looo) shares, which, together with a capital already subscribed, will form a sufficient fund to provide all the necessary appliances for rendering both the passenger and goods Ira/He in proper working ordei'j and still leave a considerable balance in hand to meet further operations. After the present contract is car- , ried out the Company propose extending the line across iheArahura Eiver, and as far as the Waimea, w here the next station will be formed. The Company have been in communication a\ ith his 'Honor the Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury, upon the subject of a government guarantee for payment of interest on all capital invested by them in the proposed works, and have received assurances from him of his unqualified support and concurrence and he lias promised to bring the subject before his executive so soon us tho Company's works are in such a forward state as to justify him in assuming that the public are desirous of forwarding the undertaking.
