THE PRICE OF BREAD.

(to the editor of the west coast times.) , Sib — The present exorbitant price of bread as compared to the cost of flour is a subject loudly colling for public interference, and I am much surprised no steps have been taken in any direction to do away with this infamous imposition. I observe best- Adelaide flour is thore quoted at LlO to Lll, and new Chilian flour, ut Nelson, at Lls per ton, whilst bread is still charged at eighteeapence per loaf. What an enormous profit tho bnkers must be making ? A great many residen+s here are, like myself, anxious to have our families over here, but the high price of provisions, and bread more especially, deters us from taking this „ step ; the expense of living would be beyond oil" means. Can nothing be done to mitigate this evil ? A requisition to the chairman of the Municipal Council, for a public meeting on the subject, might do some good, and I venture to assure you if a committee were appointed to go round the town, they would get at least tlu-ee hundred customers who would pledge themselves, for a given period, to give their support exclusively to the first baker who would lower the price of bread to one shilling at least. The price of flour in Dunediu, the Gnvy, and this place, arc about the same, while bread is charged Bd, J. 6, and Is 6.1, in these respective places. I need say no moiv, and trusting you will consider the subject of sufficient importance to give this letter insertion in your paper, I am, &c, One With a Large Family. «
