THE PAKIHI DIGGINGS.
We ("Grey River Argus") have received a letter from the new diggings tit the Pakihi, from a person upon whose veracity we can rely. It is as follows : —
October 15. I left Greymouth and went over the Saddle, and then followed /down -tie Buller. I daresay you know how things are going on over the Saddle, so I shall start at the Buller. A storekeeper has swam his horses down the Buller gorges with a boat, and he has blazed v track from White's station to the Pakihi, and intends to"" cut it about thirteen miles, of which fuur will have to be corduroyed. The provisions are brought from the Buller in schooners and boats. There has been a schooner' out there this week past, biit being unable to get into the Pakihi owing •to the surf, ' has returned to the Buller. The entrance is rocky and narrow. I should think that there are, about 100
men getting gold on both rushes — the old prospectors and the new beach lead, about a mile from the former workings. About fifteen clain.s are getting gold on the tteach lead. There is a belt of bush about 200 yards *to go through from the beach to the verge of the plain, then you come to the lead. It is" duffered out" where it was started and was shallow, but it has run into twenty feet sinking, dry ami solid. Some claims have yielded as much as a pennyweight to the shovel, but it is generally good payable ground. Some parties exaggerate it dreadfully, but I think it will turd out well* There is room enough on the plain, butJL think it premature for a large population until something fresh is struck. Provisions are cheap — Hour, 22s 6d ; bacon, 2s 6d ; tea, 4s : sugar, Is. If the surf should continuv. supplies will become scarce. Jacob's Ladder, at the Miko Cliffs, is in a bad state, but the Nelson Government are cutting another track to avuid the ladder. I met a great many diggers on the road. There are no Grejmumih. storekeepers at the Pakihi y'ei. -the Buller traders doing all the lm>.ness. Mr Mann has a large store, and several others, Mr Warden Kynnerely is* Hourly expeoted here from Nelson*; hg W fcftV# pfcftty fa 4ft fc? ft ffMJf f '
