A meeting of the " unemployed*' working men (say 3 the " Avgus" of the 12th instant), convened by placard, was held last evening, in the Eastern Market, for the purpose of iufluencing the G-overnmcnt to adopt measures to alleviate their condition. There were from seventy to a hundred persons present, but no programme of the proceedings had been arranged, and there appeared to be only one of the conveners "of the meeting — a Mr Ryan — in attendance. After some good-humored, banter with reference to the neglect of those who had called the unemployed together^ it was agreed to adjourn until this evening at eight o'clock, by which time, it was promised, better arrangements would be made. It was stated that there was a large number of men both in town and country out of employment, l and it was suggested that they should go to the Chief Secretary's office en masse to assert their claims oh the 'Government for consideration, A proposal that the meeting should be adjourned until two, o'clock this clay, met with. great disapprobation, the "unemployed" representing that most; of them had an odd job or two which occupied them during working hours. Preparations for tho elections in Tasmania aro proceeding briskly, and it is stated that th» next Parliament, so far as the representatives of the northern district are concerned, is likely to be a great improvement on its predecessor.
