THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
'•OFFICIAL: DECLARATION or THE POLL."
In accordance with the advertisement issued by the Chairman and Assessors, an announcement 6i the numbers polled for the several candidates for the Municipal Council on Wednesday last, was made at the Supreme Court House yesterday afternoon, at four o'clock. There wa.s a considerable attendance. Mr Sale occupied the judicial seat, and Mr C. Williams and Mr G. W. Bin.icy sat on either side x of him on the Bench. The Chairman said that an error had been discovered iv the numbers announced oii Wednesday. He attributed the error in the casting up of tho votes to the confusion occasioned by the, noises outside. As there was atf error, however, it was necessary to rectify it. It was not of mucii importance, except in ono case. The following was the oorrect list of the votes polled : — Huugerford ... 68 Bonar .'. 64 Williams ... / ... .... 63 ' ' Anderson .. 56 Ecclesfidd v ..: 53 ' Shaw 50 Cuuimiug .... ... - ... 49 Fifczsimraons .»., ... 49 • Then followed two other names, between which there was a .tie, viz. :- - ' F. L. Clarke ... , ... ij Lynch .v ••• 47 Tho ninth seat lay between thoae two gentlemen, and it had been found necessary to telegraph for legal advice as to the course to be pursued. The Assessors and himself had been advised that they had no power to give a casting vote, and accordingly, unless the two candidates settled the matter between them, there must be a fresh election. ' This would be for the one seat only. It was deemed desirable to have the election over as soon as possible, and he announced, therefore, that it would take place on Tuesday next, at the Warden's Court, unless in the meantime the matter was arranged by the retirement of one of the candidates.
Mr Bright asked whether Mr Clarke and Mr Lynch were the only candidates entitled to contest the unfilled seat, or whether others could be put in nomination.
The Chairman replied that no_new candidate could be brought into the field. The contest lay entirely between the two gentlemen for whom a tie of votes had been recorded. /
Mr Bright then proposed the thanks of the citizens present to Mr Sale and the Assessors, for their endeavors to give effect to a very intricate measure, and congratulated them upon the success with which they appeared to have extricated themselves from a great dilemma. y\v Brown seconded the motion, which was carried with applause, and acknowledged by the Chairman. The proceedings then terminated.
