"We clip the following from the "Daily Southern Cross": — " A few 1 weeks > since w© noticed the fact of a volcanic eruption having taken place at Hawaii. We take the following additional particulars from the * Spectator' of the 9th June :—": — " There would almost ' appear to be some nitro-glycorine at the bottom of the volcano of Hawaii, the Muuno Loa, which baa. recently been in eruption. A new crater recently opened ne".. 1 the summit, but theNflood v of lava found some subterranean outlet, and burst out about hah 0 way up in a column of liquid fire 100 feet in diameter, and from 100 to 1000 feet in height. The column white at base, blood-rea above, glowe,d for twenty days, and was visible 200 miles away All this while a river of fire ran from it dpwn the mountain side, leaping from i*ock to ike' * burning, the forests, and adding indefini*% to the glare of the fiery column, which, yith tho-inceßsant v reTorberations heard forty miiles off, and the canopy of smoke which covered ' thousands of square miles,' formed a a<¥** of lerror such as only those who ''v-I' mjljfe* volcanoes will ever see.'
