Thursday, Sept. 20. The Coorong broke main crank shaft off" Wiliunga at seven o'clock last night, and was toYed back to the Port. The passengers and cargo go by the Aldinga on Saturday. \ The Key. Mr Julian VV oods f secretary to Bishop Shiel, has had the title of dean conferred upon him, and he will shortly receive the title of Doctor of Divinity from Rome. The Treasurer made his financial statement to-day. He does not propose to make any change in the tariff. v It is said- that the next crop of cereals will be the largest ever known here. The flower show at the town-hall today, was well attended. A strong expression of opinion has been ' given in the Assembly; and by the press, as to the inefficiency of the present police' i force, and to the absence of the chief commissioner exploring. Madame Durand's jewellery has been found. Captain John Hart is likely to be appointed the South Australian Commissioner to' the Paris Exhibition. A petition is being signed to set aside the verdict of the Marine Board yesterday in the matter of the collision between the mail» boat and the Coorong. There was a heavy thunderstorm this evening, at fiye o'clock. The corn market is very quiet. Holders of wheat ask 5s 6d, and the millers offer 5s 3d only, owing to the unsatisfactory state of the flour market. ' Friday, Sept. 21. A public meeting has been called by the mayor for to-night, to consider the advisability of lighting the city with gas. Considerable opposition is anticipated. The financial statement made by the Treasurer yesterday gives a favorable impression of the position of the colony, in spite of present" commercial depression. The Treasurer said, that in one article of consumption, beef, his belief was that this colony would not be able for many years to supply itself. The prospects next harvest are. very favorable. In the Supreme Court to- day an action was b; ought by the widow of the late police inspector, Mr Reid, against Michael and Edward White, of Coleraire, near Hamilton, Victoria, for trover ard money len.. After the evidence was heard, the jury gave a verdict for the plaintiff for L 917. As soon as the verdict wa^ given it was found that the defendants had " levanted," and they were nowhere td be found. The Court granted an immediate execution. The agents of the Coorong have bought a shaft, and the steamer is now being repaired here. She will leave for Melbourne on Wednesday. A fireproof safe, manufactured in the colony by Messrs Simpson and Co.,' was severely tested in the park lands yesterday, with complete success. Business continues in a very unsatisfactory state. A feeling of want of confidence still prevails, and purchases are only made to supply immediate demands. There is a speculative enquiry for cornsacks at 14s 6d. U.V.C. brandy, 21s ; currants, 4|d ; Booth's gin, 13s 3d to 13s 6d ; in quarters, 4s 3d ; Byass' porter, 8s to 9s ; Belmont caudles, lid. The corn market dull. A small sale of wheat at 5s 3d is reported ; buyers only offer os. Flour is very unsaleable. Arrived. — Gazelle, from Foo-chow-foo, with a cargo of tea. She has been ordered on to another port.
Saturday, Sept. 22. The Chief Justice has delivered judgment in the salvage case in re Electric today. He awarded the steam-tug LIOOO, the boat's crew Ll5O, and the pilots LIOO. The counsel for the defendant interds appealing against the two latter awards. . A large meeting was field* in the Town Hall last night, to discuss the question of lighting the city with gas. It ended in vetoing the question, and a poll of the citizens has been demanded and granted. Wheat is dull of sale,' and prices are lower. The inspectors of police here have ' demanded an enquiry into their conduct, in consequenc of the attacks made upon thorn by the press, and by the members of the Legislature in Parliament. The Government have' granted their request. Commander Hutchinson, R.N., brings out orders from the Admiralty to proceed with the survey of Spencer's Gulf. Should the next mail bring no news from the Northern' Territory, another vessel will be despatched thither. Monday, Sept. 24. - A large number of laborers are besieging the Government offices for employment. The election of five members of, the Legislative Council takes x pla*ce on Wednesday. - Mr Osmond Gillies, one of the oldest and most respected colonists, died yesterday, .lie was seventy-nine years of a^e, and was the first Colonial Treasurer in South Australia. The operations of the steam dredge for the removal of the inner bar of Port Adelaide have been very successful. ' ' The old Adelaide Racecourse is expected to be re-opened in November. ! The fat cattle market is firmer. The supply, is moderate. A mob of good weighty cattle, mixed, sold at Ll2Vss; middling, L 9 12s. Supplies of fat sheep are large. There is a fall in the price of good wethers. There is a good demand tor store cattle. The weather is fine after the heavy rain last night. ' . • Tuesday, S«nt. 25. Notwithstanding the severe drought of the past season, there will be over 3,000^000 sheep t-> be shorn this season. One sale of wluat is reported to-day at 5s 2d ; but other buyers only offer ss. In the Supreme Court to-day, in its divorce and matrimonial jurisdiction, a case was tried of Dickenson versus Dr. Dickenson, late of Coljingwood, in Victoria. The proceedings were at the sujt of Mrs Dickenson, who now got a decree nisi for a divorce.
