This is a very marked improvement upon the published statistics of previous months.
Cobb's Christehuvch coach arrived in good time on Wednesday night, notwithstanding the -very unfavorable' weather which prevailed during the trip across. The road is reported to be in excellent condition, and the rivers are easily fordable. We noticed on the way-bill the named of' Messrs Cavslow, Jones, Digby, Clnrke, and Rowley, as passengers from the other side. An extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of the Greymouth and Saltwater Creek, Tramway Company (Limited) was held in Kilgour's Union Hotel, on Tuesday evening (says the " Grey River Argus"), Mr H. Kenrick iv the chair. The letter from Mr Commissioner Sale, granting protection to tho* line upon certain conditions, was read by the chairman and submitted for the approval of the shareholders. After somo discussion, during which an opinion was freely expressed that the conditions imposed by the Government were highly favorable to the company, it was unanimously resolved to accept the offer of the Government, and to have the company registered forthwith. At a subsequent meeting of the directors it was resolved , to push forward the works with vigor, and at once to call for tenders for the necessary materials required. In the meantime, Mr JBain, the district surveyor, will complete the survey of the line, which is already far advanced. Mr Jame^ Payne was appointed the paid secretary to the company, and a number of matters of a routine nature were disposed of.
Never was a public work constructed in Westlund whicli confers such convenience to the public as the Gibson's Quay wharf and the buildings attached thereto,, of which the principal is the transit shed. Wo hare iv former issues alluded to this building and its great utHity, which -every day Is moro fully understood and appreciated — especially as the Government have' carefully abstained from imposing any vexatious restrictions upon its use. There appears, however, to be some doubt existing of the absolute purpose for which it was erected, and certainly very errcneous notions are entertained concerning the merchandise which it is obligatory on the part of consignees to pass through it, and the fees chargeable thoreon. The transit shed is Provincial Government property, and over it tho Custom-house authorities have no control, save that, a.s there are bonded goodf usually lying thewi tho abad is tooked. ovpif night hy
