THE ESCAPE OF DOWNS.

(TO THE EDITjlt OF THE WJJ3T COAST TIMES.) Siu, — In justice to the subordinate or under warders, I beg to state that they were totally ignorant of the escape of the prisoner Patrick Downs, who was employed in close proximity to, the gaol, erecting a house for the chief warder, until the latter intimated tho same to them. The whole of the subordinate officers were in charge of the hard labor gang, at the foot of tho terrace, and, therefore, could not possibly be held respousible for a prisoner who had not becu placed in their, custody on that day, or for some time prior to his taking French leave. I am, &c. A Friend to Justice. Hokitika, Sept. 19, 1866.
