The yards of the Victoria, sloop, were manned, rockets fired, and blue lights burned. It was an exceedingly pretty sight. The Pharos landed his Excellency at the Sandridge Railway Pier, where the Mayor and Corporation received hini, He was driven out to Toorak (Government House). , Wednesday 1 , August ]5. The new GoVerMr *VAs Sworn in at noon td-tlay, on a platform erected in front of the Treasury Buildings. , Almost all the public .officials .in Melbourne and the suburbs, and about,fiVe thousand people v w ere present. The Governor was loudly cheered.
The Rev. Dr. Shiel3 was consecrated Roman Catholic Bishop, of Adelaide, . today, at St. Francis.'s Cathedral . Th^ ceremony lasted thick hour's and a half. A sermon was preached by the Rev. Mr Power, of Ballarat.
The Government and merchants' offices were closed this afternoon, and there has been little business done.
4000 bushels of damaged wheat were sold at from 2s 9d to ss. Maisse is more inquired for.
1000 cases JDIC2 were disposed of at the full figure. Sales of hops were made at Is 9d.
Thursday August 16.
A meeting of Germans is to be held tonight to obtain subscriptions for their countrymen who have suffered in the war.
A fair amount of business has been done. For breadstuffs there is a more active inquiry, and best town brands of Adelaide flour are quoted at LI 6 to Ll6 5s ; for 100 tons Chilian Ll3 10s -has been refused. Wheat has also somewhat improved ; 5000 bushels of Chilian has been sold at 6s 3d. 1000 bushels fine colonial oats realised 5s 7£d. Hennessy's case brandy is easier, 500 cases to arrive have been placed at 27s 3d ; an invoice of Muntz metal has been placed at about lOd : hops are very saleable, 34 pockets brought Is 8d: and 20 pockets Is 10d. The Admiral Fitzroy's cargo of Mauritius sugar, consisting of 5798 bags, were offered at auction, all but 700 bags placed — good to fine counters, L 35 to L 37; yellow crystals, L 36 9s to L3B 2s ; middling to good white crystals, L3B 6s to L4l. The Jeannio Oswald's cargo of Java produce was sold by auction — the sugars realised L4l 10s to L 43 12s 6d ; rice L 23 to L 23 10s. Teas are in good demand. 75 chests good medium congous were sold Is lid ; and good common at Is 7d.
Friday, August 17.
The owners of the City of Launceston have commenced an action against Messrs Grice, Scrivener, and Co., for the value of the steamer, which was cut down in collision with the Penola last November.
Flour, Chilian, Ll3; Adelaide, Ll6 ; wheat 6s to 6s 6d : oats 5s to 5s 6d ; barley, 4s 7d ; mrize, 4s 8d to 4s 9d, and very dull. *
