MINING SUMMARY.
In consequence of being compelled to make up our usual Monthly Summary on short notice to be in time for the only mail that will catch tho Panama steamer at Wellington, we are compelled to hold over our tWually full summary of mining events during the month. We .will, however, direct attention to tho exportation of gold, as given in the Customs Returns, which we believe to be considerably within the truth, as_,we were unable to obtain the exact returns for the present month. Very fair accounts indeed have reached us from the different mining centres, where nothing but activity and steady industry prevails. At the Ballarat Eush in the Waimea district, the Hau Hau in the Eanicri, and on the large flat beneath Eosstown, in the Totava district, deep sinking is being successfully prosecuted, and attended by such results as a few months ago was hardly anticipated. In all parts of the district sluicing is followed in all its branches, and yielding I excellent returns. At the Kanieri, no less than 8 : x steam engines are in full wdrk, besides several water-wheel? ; and that their introduction was a wise proceeding, is now universally admitted and fully borne out by results. Late oventa lead to the supposition that we are upon the eve of extensivo and most important quartz reef discoveries, as a large body of likely looking stone, by some considered only a "blow-up," whilst others ' maintain tHat a well developed reef is struck, was hit upon by some prospectors about ten days ago. The locality of the find is about twenty-seven miles up the Arahura river, at the foot of tho snowy-range. So far the stone is barren, but its presence is a good indication that other reefs of a richer nature exist in the neighborhood. A reef stone, speckled with fino gold was also picked up in the Totara district the week before last, aud these fact 3 have led to the formation of several exploring parties, who are determined to ransack the country immediately under the high range, as the belief is widely entertained that roofs will be found intersecting tho mountains in many places.
