MEETING OF THE SEARCH VOLUNTEERS.
DISTRIBUTION OF THE REWARD.
Yesterday afternoon, the Search Committee met the Volunteers in the Trafalgar Hotel, for the purpose of distributing the reward given by the Government to those who volunteered under Mr Saxton, to search for the bodies of the murdered, men. The Provincial Government, hearing of the generous and unanimous determination of the Volunteers not to accept the reward of L2OO offered by Mr Kempthome for the recovery of his brother's body, as generously resolved to signify their estimation of* their conduct, and the Government thereforeugave a sum of LIOO over and above the L4OO offered for the finding of the bodies. There is one thing we may be permitted to suggest here, and that is, that a memento of the Volunteers' exertions should be obtained and given to each. A small bronze cross inscribed with the Maungatapu, or some indication of the tragedy, and having engraved on it the name of the Volunteer who shall receive it, would cost little, and would be highly prized by every man. In virtue of sucn a decoration, each man who received it would consider himself a detective against all criminals who might be suspected of harboring felonious intentions against the lives and property of peaceful men. i
