We have Launceston papers to the 27th ult. The "Times" of that date reports :—: — Breaclstuffs are without change, and we still quote flour at Ll4, and wheat at 6s. Oats are slightly firmer, and are worth fully 4s Bd. Butter remains quiet at Is 9d to Is lOd. Sales of potatoes at L 4 15s, bags in, are reported. Hay'is in full supply, and is selling at L4 los. Tasmanian oatmeal, L3O to L 32. In dairy produce the only alterations to report is a decliue in butter, for which the present quotation is Is 9d to Is lOd. In the live stock market Messrs Bell and Wcstbrook report. — "On Saturday prices were — Eat pigs, for bacou, L 4 t) L 5 5s ; porkers, 22s to 48s, or s£d per lb ; small stoves, 15s to 235 ; second size do, 28s to 365. The demand for pigs has lessened, and holders wishing to sell must reduce their prices. Several horses were disposed of — Chaise cart and plough horses from L 9 10s to Ll2 10a ; hacks, Lsto L 8; weeds and rough scrubbers at low rates." Of the markets, &c, in Hobart Town, the "Mercury," of the 25th ult, furnishes the following report : — The history of the past month affords us very little to record in the way of commercial intelligence. Trade generally has been steady, and no important alterations have taken place in the state -of the markets for general merchandise. The winter season is now upon us in full severity,, and as a consequence country trade has fallen off, the roads being in many places almost impassable. Our market is well supplied, and the Asphodel, which arrived a few days ago, has fully made up stocks where deficiencies existed. With dry goods the market has been glutted during the month by large arrivals from Melbourne. These have been chiefly of slops, and boots and shoes, extensive parcels of which have been almost retailed by auction at from thirty-five to fifty per cent, discount. The consequence of this is, that our warehousemen report a slack trade, although first-class parcels of seasonable goods can be placed at fair prices. Our public companies have not held any verj prominent place in the month's history. We understand that the quartz-crushing companies continue working, but we have heard very little as to results. The Mersey and Deloraino Tramway Company are about proceeding with energy to finish their line, having made arrangements to overcome the difficulty occasioned by the embarrassment of their original contractor. The whole of the ironwork for f <he Hue is now on its way out. From a comspondence laid before the Board, it appears tliat the engineer has completed tho survey from the present portion of the work to the terminus at Latrobe, and that there is no obstacle to its being proceeded with the moment the rest is finished. The Pyrolignite Company are progressing favorably with their works on the Derwent, and it is .hoped that in a month or two at furthest they will be able to commence operations.
