The gloomy, threatening, foggy woather whioh has during tho groater part of the week hung ovetf tho town, was followed yesterday at noon by a steady breeze from the N.W. accompanied by smart rain. During tho afternoon the breozo considerably increased, and the downpour was heavy and incessant j when tho day dosed a furious gale was blowing which drove sheets of blinding rain through the streets, shaking to their foundations some of the frailer edifices. The scene outside was dismal enough, and pitiless in the extreme, driving all save thoso who were through business compelled to remain abroad inside for sholter. It was truly a Westland winter's day, and the severest without exception which has been experienced this season. Yet, notwithstanding there was erery inducement for vessels to remain closely at their moorings, the Kennedy put to sea, bound to Greymouth, her captain being anxious to maintain that reputation for punctuality deservedly accorded him ; but when tho offing was gained the weather assumed such a sinister aspect, that fearful of finding the Grey bar impassable he decided upon running inside again, and there wait until the galo broke. In doing so Captain Whitwell acted with judgement and discretion, as the gale is sure to raise a heavy surf, which may for come days keep the ports on this cons losely looked. t
The steamer Ant was wrecked nenr Barwon Heads on the 12th instant in a fog. The orew ana passengers wore saved. The following is the report of Captain Harrison : — At 8.15 a.m. this day, the Ant, steering N.E. by E. struck on a rock five miles S.W. off Barwon Heads, about a mile from the shore, the engines going slowly at the time. Immediately on striking a seaman reported the fore compartment had filled. Captain Harrison on examining found it impossible to get the steamer off, the engine having stopped. They then lowered the boats down to save the passengers and crew, there being a very heavy roll but no break. The chief of the passengers and crow were put into the lifeboat to keep clear of the roll 5 - four hands and a passenger remaining on board until 10 a.m., when finding tho vessel full of water, with her lack broken, left her to procure assistance to «aye the deck cargo. At 11 engaged a fishing I>oat to take Captain Harrison and others to Queenscliff, and gave instructions to Captain Tullooh and hands to go back to the wreck to look after the interests to all concerned. At 1,30 landed at Quinscliffe. Captain Harrison attributes the cause of the misfortune to the error of the steering compass, having found during the voyage from three to four points over the deviation of tho compass, as shown by the card. — Telegram in " Sydney Morning Herald."
