Wo have seldom seen the entrance in so favorable a condition for working as it was yesterday morning at tide time ; for tho sea was of glassy smoothness, and so little surf was running that a waterman's wherry might have yentui'ed outside with safety. Tho channel, moreover, waa both straight and deep, the lead lino in tho shallowest part giv/'mg two fathoms. Suoh an excellent opportunity for inward-bounders to cross the dreaded bar so seldom presents itself at this season of tho yew, that great regret was expressed that only two of the many " expeoted arrivals " had put in an appearance. The ss. Airedale and schooner J. B. Russel wero, however, all that graced tho roadstead with their presence, if wo except a small coasting hooker from tho Groy. That rendezvous of shipping agents and others (on tho beach t % the end of the Empire right-of-way) whoso interests and inclination induce them each morning to scan the anchorage outside, was well atfoiuraid) and many an anxious glanco was cast eeaNvarda by consignees whoso preoious ' bottoms' wero overdue, iv tho expectation that they might yet heave in sight in time for tho day's tide. The horizon, houevor, remained un« broken; yet, notwithstanding, tho roads'.eqd ' presented a busy scono, for all tho harbor steamer* ran outside, erich having somo work to perform. Tho Vevteveve, p.s., bound to tto CtW) frit itaiM followed, by the Bvuee,
p.s., hor domination being tho samo. Following close upon each other camo tho Challenge, Yarra, and Lioness, p.ss., tho former to tow in the J. B. Riißsol, tho latter to attend in liko manner upon tho John Mitchell, whilst the Yarra was bound to tho Airodalo, s.s., to tranship paasongers and cargo. Theso last returned in duo course aftor performing their rospectivo duties, aud just as tho day was closiug tho Bruce, 'under a cloud of steam and Bmoko, hovo in sight to tho northward, and ontoroil tho river in time to savo daylight. The p.s. Challenge on Thursday last,- towed tho Prince Consort to sea, and then picking up tlio Victoria schooner outsido, steered to tlio Groy, nud convoyed tun* cliargo safoly across that bnr tho next morning ; aftorwards returning to tho roadstead, and taking in tho schooner Wild Wave. Sho also towod
out tho Rambler audTambo, aud tlion steamed for Hokitika ; but arriving too lato on tide, anohored in the roadstead that night, and crossed tho bar on noxt morning's tido. As a proof that tho West Coaifc is not deficient in fish, vro may mention that after sho droppod anchor, flftoon splendid cod from four to six pounds each, were caught in ouo hour and ten minutes. Wo believa that a proporly organised fishing company would pay woll hero.
Tho e.f. Wallaby, J. Palraor, commander, arrived at tho wharf, from Nolson via tho 1 Buller and Greyniouth, on the 16th inst., at 280 p.m. She loft Nelson on tho 12th inst., at 9 a in., but mooting heavy S.W. weather outsido the Sandspit, anchored under Capo Farewell at 7 p.m. A slight lull ocourring tho next morning, she weighed and proceeded on her course, but was compollcd by the increasing gale to agaiu run for shelter — this time into West Wanganui, where she dropped anchor at 10 30 a.m. Left again at 8 30 on tho 14th, and camo to an anchor in tho Grey roadstead at 6 a.m. tlio next day, crossing tho bar of that river at 10 30 a.m. During her stay afc Groyniouth, sho landed 20 tons of cargo, 50 sheop, 2 bullocks and 1 horse, and loft for this port at noon oh tho 16th, arriving as above. Tlio Wallaby brings 30 tons of cargo, 120 pigs, 1 horse. Also 12 passongors from Greymouth. Tho schooner J. B. Russel loft Christchuroli at 4 p.m. on tlio 11th inst.. .with westerly winds and lino weather. The noxt day sho rounded Kaikoras Peninsula, and passed Capo Farewell on tho 15th, and at 8 a.m. on tho 17th hove to off tho bar, after an oxcollont passage of flvo days sixteen hours, which, for a sailing vessel is, wo beliovo, tho quickest on record. Tho J. B. Rtissol was towed safoly to tlio wharf a fow ho\ivs aftor her arrival by tho Challenge, p.s. She' brings a full gonoral cargo.
Tho P.N.Z. and A.R.M. Co.'s s.s. Airedale, W. Meikloham, loft Port Chalmers at 4 p.m. on the 13th inst., and arrived at Bluff harbor at 11 a.m. noxfc day. During the run a heavy S.W., gale prevailed. Sho left tho Bluff on the 16th at 8 a.m., and after a splendid run of 42 hours rounded to off this port at 2 a.m. on tho 17. Thick hazy weather kept hor standing off and on until daylight, when she ran in and brought up. After leaving Bluff Hurbor heavy S.W. weathor was experienced until Fouveaux Straits woro cleared and
hence to tho roadstead light head winds and a southorly sea. Tho Aircdalo brings about 30 tons of cargo and 40 passengers. Sho sails positively for Nelson and Wellington with passengers and mail for tho Kaikoura at 11 a.m. to day.
Tho sohooner Caledonia which arrived on
the 6th iiisfc., loft Hokitika on tho 25(1i ultimo, and s mado tlio passage via Cook's Straits, through Avliich slio had a fine run, and was aftorwards obliged to put into Cloudy Bay, where sho remained one night through stress of weather j from thence light variable winds and fine weather was experienced until off Ohiaru, on' Monday last, when sho was caught in a heavy S.W. gale which lasted twentyfour hours, and then veorod' northerly. Sho subsequently had light variable winds to arrival. Her cargo consists of about five tons Bhipchandlery consigned to Messrs Royse, Mudio and Co.—" Otago Daily Times."
duo Bnips from homo, i 3 causing much inconvonienco. A largo part of tho cnrgooß having boon placed to arrivo, tho uncertainty as to tho goods being soon to hand or otherwise, is oporating as a hindranco to othor businoss.
