SOCIAL AND DOMESTIC.
Public order has been well maintained throughout the month, notwithstanding the known presence in the district of a considerable number of lawless characters, attracted by the ' fancied opportunities offered in a rich gold country of pursuing their nefarious career. The most marked incident in the police record of the month, is the occurrence of a fracas at one of the hotols in town, in which one man met his death from a blow on the head. Tho landlord of the house, -who is a man much respeoted in town as a useful citizen, has been committed to take his trial on a charge of manslaughter. There has been a bank robbery at Okarita, the property stolen amounting to some L 2500. Mr George Dobson, a surveyor in the service of the Government, has been missing for some weeks, having been last seen on the Arnold River on the 24th May, He had left Greymouth for the purpose of surveying a new track through the bush. Several parties are out searching for the body of this unfortunate gentleman, all hope of finding him alive being abandoned, and the fear entertained that he has been murdered, probably ' in, mistake for some other intended victim. The weather has for the most part been' remarkably fine throughout the month, although we are not without indications that winter is upon us. ' For the general domestic history of the month, we refer to our other columns, in which the story will be found told in detail.
