HOKITIKA LIVE STOCK MARKET REPORT,
Fob the Month op May, 1866. Jones, M*GiiAßhan & Co. , report this market as furnished with the following supply during the past month : — Fat cattle, 525 ; calves, 6; . sheep, 4280 ; and pigs, 44. The over-supply in sheep having been so enormous, prices on all meats (except pork) fell considerably ; and as a large quantity of this surplus mutton is yet un-consumed-—coupled with the certainty of the rush of sheep to this market still continuing — we rather anticipate a further decline. Had any one here the supreme power possessed by the " Emperor of all the Russias," and were he to issue a decree that nothing but mutton (in the nature of meat) should be consumed, to the extent of his pleasure, the meat-eating community of Westland would have all their work before them to eat up the supply now in hand within a month. We have on more than one occasion tendered our advice on this subject, and we cannot say that we feel very deeply flattered by the practical reply given to our counsel. Under the present state of things, we feel that we are quite fulfilling our duty by simply quoting market value of beef; Fat Cattiiß. — We sold altogether during the past month 18 head, the balance of 42 shipped from Napier in the Thane, steamer, These were very good, and realised an average of L 29 10s all round. We quote prime quality beef aa worth from L 3 69 8d to L 3 155. ; medium, 6d to 7d per lb. Jones, M'Glashan & Co., Stock Salesmen, Revell street, Hokitika. Ist June, 1866.
