(From the Government Gazette, of March 6.) Nobth-East Coast of Australia.— Coral Patch in Blaokwood Channel. Information has been received at the Admiralty that H.M.S. Salamander, January 20, 1865, whilst Bteering to tho south-west through the Blackwood channel, on tho route recommended, from Raine Island towards the Middle Bank, struck on an unknown coral patch, •with only eoyon feet on its shoalost part at low water. The patch lies about a mile E.S.E. of the eastern part of the Middlo Banks, or in lat. lldeg. 4/Imin. lOseo. S. j lon. 143deg. 41min. 866e0. E. It 18 about 230 yards long, east and west, 110 yards wide, has ten to eoventeen fathoms all round it, and fifteen to Bovonteen fathoms in tho channel, a inilo wide, between it and the reef in connection with tho eastern s&nd bank on the Middlo Banks. From its ahoalest Bpot of seven feet, tho contra of the eastern Band bank on the Middlo Banks bears W. i N,, distant two and a half jnilti, and the iouth extreme of Sir Charles
Hardy Islands S.W. fourteen and a half miles Vessols entering tho Great Barrier Reof by tho Baino Island entrance, should, as soon as possiblo after passing north or south of Eaino Island, bring its beacon to boar N. E. $ E., steering S.W. £ W. (allowing for tide and a northerly set) for Sir Oharlos Hardy Islands. As soon as tho beacon is lost sight of, tho vessel will bo clear of tho shoal patchos westward of tho 100 fathoms lino of soundings, and on tho bank. Look out now for Sir Charles Hardy Islands, aud when they aro plainly seen, steer for their south oxtromo on a S.W. | W. bearing, and when tho easternKiost sandbank on tho middle banks bear N. W. by W., and tho weßt Ashmoro bank (if seen S.S.W. £ W., tho vessel will bo well to tho south-west of tho Salamander patch, and a courso may then be shaped for oithor tho north or Pollard ohannols. >\ (All bearings aro magnetic Variation sdcg. This notico affects tho following Admiralty charts: — Australia, north and oast coasts, shoot 21, N. 2,354: Ooral Sea, No. 2,764 : and Australia, northern portion, No. 2,759 a 5 also, Australia Diroctory, vol. 2, pago 228/ Leading Lights and Beacons por Newcastle, New Soutii Wales. In order to increase tho facilities for navigating Newcastle Harbor, leading lights for entering, and also leading lights for taking tho north channel, will bo exhibited on, and after Tuesday, tho Ist May, 1866. The two fairway lights for entering (red and bright), will be shown from beacons 228 feet apart, in a S.W. half S. aud NE. half N. direction, erected on a clear space of ground on tho hill at tho back the town, between tho Wesloyan and Catholic churches. Those for taking tho north channel, also red bright, will bo Bhown from beacons oreotod on tho breakwater in tho vicinity of tho old Bull Beacons, at a distance of 100 foot apart, in a W. by N. and E. by S. direction. In both cases, when tho lights aro in lino, the bright will bo the uppermost and tho red tho lowermost of tho two. In tho daytime, however, the order of colors will be roversod, as it is intonded to paint tho upper boacons rod and tho lower ones whito. The lowor or north-eastern of tho two obelisks at prcsont usod fov tho loading mark in, situated on Shepherd's Hill, will bo removed, as likewise will bo tho remnant of tho Bull beacons on tho breakwater. Tho exhibition of these 1 leading lights will not necessitate different sailing directions to those already published, any inoro than tho lights and new beacons being substituted for tho obelisks aud boacons which aro at present in use. In entering tho port of Newcastle at night great caution will bo necessary, in oousequence of the strength of the tide, and due allowance will have to bo made for ebb or flow, on sighting tho north channel lights, and about to alter course from S.W. £ S., with tho fairway lights in one, to W. byN., the direction whioh a ressel will have to steer to keop the north channel lights in line to gain an anohorage in tho north harbor. Free A drawback of the whole of such duties shall be allowed for wines intended for the consumption of tho officers of her Majesty's troops in the colony of New Zealand and of tho officers of her Majesty's navy serving -on board any of her Majesty's ships in the seas adjoining thereto or such wines may be landed on first importation or delivered out of bond free of duty subject in all cases to such regulations as the Governor shall from time to time presoribe. Provided always that if any such wines shall be subsequently sold in tho said colony except for the use or consumption^ any of her Majesty's military or naval officers as aforesaid the same shall be forfeited and liable to seizuro accordingly. All duties of Customs under this Act shall be charged and paid according to the standard imperial weights and measures and where such duties are charged according to any specified quantity wmght or size the same shall bo chargeable rateably on any greater or loss quantity weiglitjor size. Tlie duties of Customs imposed by this Act shall be raised levied collected and paid under the provision of " The Customs Regulation Act, 1858," and subject also to all such provisions and regulations as may for time being be in force for the collection management and reoeipt of the duties of import in the colony of New Zealand. The "Customs Duties Amendment Act 1861 " and the "Military Supplies Customs Act 1862" shall apply to all duties of Customs payablo under this Aot. . In the event of any increase undor this Act in tho duties of Customs chargeable upon any goods wares or merchandise after the making of any contract or agreement for the sale or delivery of such goods duty free it shall bo lawful for the seller in case such increase shall acoruo boforo the clearance and delivery from the warehouse of such goods at such increased duty and after payment thereof to add so muoh monoy to tho
