Tho piston is metallic, and of improved construction, and has a steol piston rod ; tho slido bars and valvo rods aro also of steol, Tho crank shaft is mado of tho bost scrap iron of tho locomotivo form, and of sufficient length to carry a fly -wheel at ono end, and a pulloy at tho other, so that tho machinery can bo driven from oithor side of tho engino, or both sides at tho samotimo. Tho fly-wheol is turned on its periphery, and being accurately countorwoightcd, longitudinal vibration of tho ongino is provented, which, when it occurs, not only increases weta 1 and toar, but is a frequent cause of .tho driving strap running off. Provision is mado for roversing tho motion of th'o ongino by a simple adjustment of thti slido valvo eccentric, and tho speed is regulated by a direct-acting governor. A forco pump, driven vertically from tho crank shaft, is attached to tho boiler for supplying it with water ; but a Gifford's injector can bo applied instead f required. All pins, oyes, and nuts, aro caso hardonod ; and self-acting lubricators, wrought out of tho solid material, aro fitted to tho journals and slides. \ This ongino is fitted with a complete set of ca'so-hardenedjhammors, firing tools, funnel, tube, brush, oil feeder, sparo guago glass, spare ,fusiblo plug, and awatorproof cover, and furnished with check chains, ock cKains,'shoo and chain. j

This ongiho Las been tested undor steam at a high prossuro before it left tlio works. Tlio power is calculated at 351bs pressure of steam in tlio boiler, but it may bo safoly workod at COlbs pressure (tlio boilerplates boing of oxtra strength, and thoroughly well stayed) at which it would givo off double its nominal power.
