HOKITIKA IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the members of the committee was held on Thursday evening last, at 8 o'clock, in Bracken's Hotel, at which the following gentlemen were present : — Messrs Clarke, Munro, Bracken, Eicke, Cassius, Eoclesfield, Prosser, and lleeves; Mr Ecclesfield being called to the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from Mr Brittan, respecting the sale of town allotments. It was moved by Mr Munro, seconded by Mr Eieke, and carried — ' That the letter bo received." A letter was read from the hon. sec, of the Okarita Improvement Committee, requesting a copy of the rules of this committee. It was moved by Mr Clarke, seconded by Mr Munro, and carried—" That the request be acceded to." It was moved by Mr Cassius, seconded by Mr Bracken, and carried — " That this committee respectfully urge upon Mr Sale the necessity of publishing the Warden's monthly reports of the wtate of the various mining districts, as they contain information of great public value." It was moved by Mr Bracken, on behalf of Mr Prosser, seconded by Mv Eicko, and carried — " That a memorial be sent to his Excellency the Governor, praying for quarterly sittings of the Supreme Court." It was moved by Mr Prosser, seconded by Mr Munroo, and carried — ''That tenders be at once inserted for cleaning and graveling Revell street." It was moved by Mr Munro, seconded by Mr Reeves, and carried— " That Messrs Ecclesfied, Eicke, and the mover be a committee to carry out the above work." It was moved by Mr lleeves. saconded by Mr Reeves, and carried— "That the Secretary be directed to write to Mr Sale asking, if a sub-com-mittee were appointed for the purpose of inspecting the Hospital arrangements, whether such a committee would be allowed to visit the Hospital for that purpose, at any time they thought proper.
Musical — A celebrated coraptsor wrote to a friond requesting tho pleasure of his company "to luncheon— key of G." His friond, a thorough musician, interpreted tho invitation rightly, anil came to tho composer's house for lunohoen at " Ono sharp." Womyss a famous theatrical manager in Philtadolplua, quitted tho businoss, and opeued instead a largo storo for tho salo of patent medicines. A friend drily romark that ho would no doubt bo successful- in filling both boxes and pit. A Quaker giving his evidence before a magistrate, who had been a capenter, was asked why he would not take off his hat' It is a privolige," said he, " that we as Quakers are allowed," « If X had it in my power,' said the angry magistrate, "I would have your hat nailed to your head " I thought," returned Obadiah, " thou hadst given over the trade of driving nails.' fa
