THE PROPOSED INTERCOLONIAL EXHIBITION.

(From the Anjus, March 27.) The Commissioners of the Intercolonial Exhibition 1 held th'cir usual general meeting at the offices of the Bohrd of Agriculture, at 4 p.m. yesterday-— present : Dr Bleasdalo (in the chair), the Hon. G. Harker, Drs T. Black and Mueller, and Messrs C. E. Bright, J. O. Kicldell, T. J. Lorimer, E. Cope, and; R. M'Dougnll. The secretary brought forward the following progress Report : — " in the matter of progress I have to report to tho commission that the applications for space are steadily increasing. Reckoning the space applied for by superficial feet, the present requirements have reached —Floor room, 2,295 feet ; table room, 810 feet ; wall room, 1,174 feet; making a total of 4,279 feet. A noticeable feature with regard to proposing exhibitors is, tho apparent general desire to exhibit the process of manufacture us well as tho manufactures themselves, a desiro which will doubtless bo fostered by tho commission as far as practicable. A noteworthy municipal moveinon't' has been mndo in tho comparatively young district of Gipps Land, in which very active steps nre being taken by an influential local committee to get iip a local exhibition in the beginning of June, preparatory to tho Melbourne one, and' details of which aro given in an excellent local circular, published by the committee. The exhibition is to be held nt Bale, and a due supply of printed matter and h-anka actually adapted to local requiromonis' have been forwarded for their use, us has also been done with regard lo t.tluu^ municipal bodies purposing to hold like exhibitions, us at Beechworth or Balluvat. As regards tho neighboring colonies, official notification may now be considered us given from South Australia of her intention of active cooperation, by telegram received from tho Chief Secretary, Adelaide, asking for a full supply of 'printed matter, for circulation throughout, that colony, and which was duly forwarded by the last mail. Tasmania has forwarded official communication, stating that a commission has been appointed to carry outthe views of the Melbourne commission (as embodied in a communication from the president), and to obtain the information desired, us far as possible. Response of a similar nature has sinoe been received from the president of the Queensland commission, together with accompanying circular, setting forth the local exhibition to be held at Brisbane, from tho Ist to .the 12th of May, and tho subsequent transmission of goods to

the Melbourne and Paris Exhibitions. The initiative amongst the New South ; Wales municipalities, as far as known .by actual communication from them, -has been taken 1 by the large district of I Grafton ; communications having been nls"o since received from Illawara and the Glebe 1 ,, but not with much apparent promise of active support' from these latter places. A. letter just received from the private secretary 1 of the Governor of New ' South Wales, inacknowledgment of communication mid 1 accompanying papers' from the president, states that they have been transmitted by his Excellency to the Executive, with request of their active cooperation."' The transaction of business was limited to the reception and adoption of the report.

Resignation op Me. Layaud.— We regret to hoar that MrLayard has resigned his placo in tho Government as Under-Secrotary of State for Foreign Affairs. Lord Eussoll, wo bolieve, expressed his reluctance to accept the tendered resignation, and it was proposed to make the honorable gentleman a inoinbor of tho Privy Oounoil j but the profforod distinction was deolinod. Mr Layavd retains offico until his suoeessor shall bo appointed. — Daily Telegraph.
