GREY RIVER.

man watku. Wednesday ... 11.52 a.m. ... 12.16 p.m.

THE TARARUA AND THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN. TO THE EDITOU OP THE " WEST COAST TIMES." Sir,— Your report of the arrival of tho steamship Tararua, in to-day's issue, is incorrect in an essential point. You state that she arrived at 9 a.m. (the same time as the South Australian), whereas she arrived at 6.30 a.m., 2.J hours in advance of the South Australian, although she left Nelson only a few minutes before that vessel. Whichever vessel may be the swifter, it is quite certain that the Tararua made tho passage from Nelson to Hokitika roadstead in from two hours to two hours and a half less time than the South Australian. Admitting that the two vessels are equal inspred, or, if you will, that the South Australian is tho faster by a shade, never theless, on tho passage from Nelson the facts wore as I have stated. It is quite certain that there can be but littlo difference in the relative speed of tho two vessels, for they left Melbourno together and arrived at Bluff Harbor within half an hour of each other I have only to ask, should the Tarania do what she has never yet done, that is, make a long passage, you will bo good enough to knock off two and a half hours, to compensate for the two and a half hours you have just stuck on. Yours respectfully, John White, Agent for tho Tararua. Hokitika, April id.
