RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Saturday, March 24th.

BiuiAcii 01' Pot.icr Ohoinance.—William Lawrence Moffat wa9 charged by John Braithwaite with using threatening language towards him. The disputants having each given a version of the story, the magistrate fined the defendant the sum of ten shillings, that being the smallest fine he could inflict. Outaining Goons hy Fai,Be Pretences. Albert Napthall Prince was charged by James Chirk, of the firm of J. L. and C. Burke and Co., of Wharf-street, with dlitaiuing goods by false and fraudulent pretences. A preliminary enquiry was held before the Resident Magistrate, Christchurch, on the Ist of March, whgn the the evidence of inspector Pendcr, who arrested the prisoner, was taken. The inspector deposed to having received a telegram from Hokitika, which he then produced, and on which he arrested the prisoner, who admitted his identity. Benjamin Lyons, the prisoner's partner, was also examined, and produced two invoices of the goods sold by the prosecutor to the prisoner, for both of which the firm had given acceptances. The prisoner was remanded until tho tenth of March, for the production of the warrant which Inspector Pender then produced. On the second occassion the accused was , defended by Mr Garrick, and was remanded till the seventeenth, when he was again brought up and remanded to Hokitika. On his being called this day on his recognizances he failed to appear, and a warrant wns ordered to issue for his arrest. We hear that Mr David Marks and Mr Henry Asher Davis, both of Christchurch, are Mr Prince's sureties. Assaui-t with Intknt to do Ghikvous Bodily llakm.— Patrick Downes wus brought up in custody, and charged with assaulting John Brandon at Arthurstowu. Sergeant M'Ennis sworn, said : Ho hud seen the prosecutor at Arthurstown and that he was not in a fit state to attend the Court. lie also produced a medical oertifioato from Dr. Sluulforth Anderson to that effect. The police applied for a remand to the SOtli instant, which was granted by the Court. The Court then adjourned till 11 o'clock on Monday (this) day.
