RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Saturday, March 24th.

Bhracii of Poucu Oudinance. — William Lawrence Moffat was charged by John Braithwaite with using threatening language towards him. The disputants having each given a version of the storj', the magistrate fined the defendant the sum of ten shillings, that beiilg the Binallest fine he could inflict, Obtaining Goods by False Pretences. Albert Naptluill Prince was charged by James Clink, of the firm of J. L. and C. Burke and Co., of Wharf-street, with obtaining goods by false and fraudulent pretences. A preliminary enquiry was held before the Resident Magistrate, Christchurch, on the Ut of March, when the the evidence of inspector Pender, who arrested the prisoner, Was taken. The inspector deposed to having received a telegram from Hokitika, which he then produced, and on which he arrested the prisoner, who admitted his identity. Benjamin Lyons, the prisoner's partner, was also examined, and produced two invoices of the -goods sold by the prosecutor to tho prisoner, for both of which the firm had given acceptances. Tho prisoner was remanded until the tenth of March, for the production of the warrant which Inspector Pender then produced. On the second occassion the accused was defended by Mr Garrick, and was remanded till the seventeenth, when he was again brought up and remanded to Hokitika. On his being called this day on his recognizances he failed to appear, and a warrant was ordered to issue for his arrest. V\ c hear that Mr David Marks and Mr Henry Asher Davis, both of Chrißtchurch, are Mr Prince's sureties. Assault with Intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm.— Patrick Downes was brought up in custody, and charged with assaulting John Brandon at Arthurstown. Sergeant M'Ennis sworn, said : He had seen the prosecutor at Arthurstown and that he was not in a fit state to attend the Court. He also produced a medical uertilioate from Dr. Shadforth Anderson to that effect. The police applied for a remand to the 30th instant, which was granted by the Court.
