Tho Bruco, p s, returned to port fvom. her Okarita trip at mid-day on Saturday. She left Hokitika on Wednesday last at 4 p.m. and arrived off Okarita bar that night, having during tho passage experienced fine weather, but encountered a heavy head sea. Tho tide not sorving sho was dolamed in tho roads until tho uoxt day. when at 10 a.m. she van in to her mooring place and by sundown had discharged tho greater part of her cargo. Tho noxt morning bYio fired up and towed out tho Mary Anno and Kate schooners, and in tho afternoon discharged tho balanco of her oargo. Saturday morning al 6 a.m. boing ready for sea sho took tho John Mitchell in tow and steamod across tho bar, but whon in tho outer surf tho tow lino unfortunately slippod through — it is supposed — not being well fastened on bonvd tho kctoh, aud sho drifted on tho North Spit. A heavy sea was breaking on the tar at Iho time which prevent od tho Bruco going back to her assistance, otherwiso tho John Mitchell might havo been saved. Wo hoard last night that although on shore sho is not in a dangerous position, and that by going to tho uccoisnry exponso blio can be relaunched into tho rivor. The Bruco roports tho Okarita bar to bo in a very bad atato, tho late S.W. winds having hove up a bank of silt, so that at high water tide thoro was when sho left only five feefc water on it. Wo wore also informed that tho p.s. Challengohad grounded in tho rivor on the Spit botween tho rivor and lagoon, and that some doubts wore felt whothor sho would bo pot off until noxt springs. Tho s.s. Thane was standing into the bar at 6 a.m. on Saturday. We very much regret having to ohroniclo tho loss of two valuable vessols at tho Groy, tho Eleanor, b.b., and tho Sea Bird schooner. The former is well known here, having boon a constant coasting trader for many months past, but from tho position sho is now in wo fear has sailed her last voyage. Tho dotails of the disaster havo not yet roached us, all wo know boing that she loft tho Grey bound to Hokitika yesterday morning and was washed up on tho North beach three miles abovo tho river. Tho Sea Bird inward bound from Melbourne, took the ground on Saturday ovouing, about a milo to the north of the signal station, and now lies stranded on tho beach with ovory probability of becoming a total wreck. Her loss is a heavy one, as sho is a bran nowvessol, one of tho Hobarb Town clippers, and cost in building £3000, and should her rclaunchiug bo detorminod on anothor £1000 may be calculated on as tho cost. Tho Sea Bird attempted tho bar under canvass, and when in tho " break " tho wind failing her sho was swopt along tho beach by tho current and unablo to face the surf driven on shore. Tho necessity of an efficient lug service for the Grey is daily becoming more imperative and wo muoh wonder ono of tho Hokitika, tugs is not stationed thero. The following signals have since been added to tho now list wo published in Saturday's issue as having boen provided for tho harbor steamers. Immediately a steamor is signallod to tho South by tho signnl man, tho second distinguishing pennant over tho first will bo hoisted. On ono being sighted to tho North, the first distinguishing pennant over tho second will bo hoisted. Tho second distinguishing pennant hoisted over tho third will bo a signal that the Harbor-Mastor is wanted. When the Harbor-Master's crow is wuntcd tho Union Jack will bo mastheaded. It is again our disagreeablo duty to ropovt tho stranding of another vessel' on the North Spit. Tho brigantino William left Sydnoy on the 22nd February, and after a fair run of oight days made tho land on tho 2nd hist, Sho was dotainod for eight days outsido waiting for an opportunity to cross the bar, and on Saturday last accepted tho sorvicos of tho Yarra to tow her in. On reaching tho bar tho South chaunol was choson lo enter by, as straighter than tho North, although not having such a doplh of water. Whon fairly in it the William look tho ground, and after a succession of bumps was hove by tho sea and drugged by tho steamer right through into tho main passage. This, howovor, completely deadened tho way of both vessels, and although iv deep water, boforo command could bo regained tho Yarra grounded on tho Spit. Sho remained (hero a few momenta only, almost immediately recovering herself and again had tho William fairly in tow, and all who wore watching thought tho critical moment was past, whon tho brigantino was observed to take a sheer to (ho North, and in spite of tho efforts of tho tug to Havo her wont broadside on to tho point of tho Spit and remained up to last night hard and fast with her rudder knocked away- Au attempt was made on Saturday night to discharge her cargo, but tko hoavy sea prevouted anything boing done. Yesterday morning, however, tho hatches woro removod and carls being backed out, sovoral tons of cargo woro safely lunded in, we aro happy to say, an excellent condition not fho slightest damago boing perceptiblo, and as tho vessel has made 110 water wo hope that no loss, save a little gonoral uvorago, will result to tho consignees. As to tho brigantino horsolf, wo trust that by the timo this paragraph is beforo our readers sho will bo eafo alongside the wharf, as having been considerably lightened nni tho servi es of tho Lioness engaged to drag her off, thoro is every likelihood this mornings tido will see her onco more afloat. Wo boliovo this accident might very easily have been averted had proper procautions been taken, and canvass act tD help the steamer. But, as usual, tho yard arm gaskots wore fast, so that there was no timo to sot her square sails, which, as tho wind was blowing steadily from tho westward, might have done good service when most needed, had tho yards beon ready for mast-heading when shs entered tho break. We havo sevoral times ore this advised musters of vessels to be ready with thoir canvas, and not placo such implicit reliance on tho steam tug whon crossing our dangerous bar. Tho disaster to tho William is another illustration of what may be the result of such folly, for we are sure that if her hoavy fore and fore-topsail had been doing duty instead of, as they wero, rolled up upon tho yards, tho William would have reached tho wharf safely and her owners boen thus saved an enormous expense. The' brig Clarendon left Melbourne on March 2nd, and after an excellent run of sevon days, hove-to off Bold Head on the 9th. Tho heavy sea running induced her to keep in the offing until the 10th, when she ran in and anchored, and was towed across the bar by tho Yarra s.t. tho day after. During tho run across, fine weather and strong W. and NW. winds prevailed. Tho Clarendon brings a full general cargo. The shhoonor Meteor loft Onohunga on tho 23rd ult., bound to Groymouth, off which port sho anchored on the 4th inst., having experienced during the run a succession of S. and SW. winds. Sho lay in the Grey road- ( stead for four days, and thon received orders to proceed to Hokitika. Loft her anchorago on tho 9th, and oainc-to oft' this bar tho uoxt day, towing to tho wharf astern of tho Lioness the day after 5 sho brings a cargo o£ timbor and potatoes. Yesterday at doad low water our reporter accompanied Captain Turnbull in tho harbor boat, in ono of lub periodical survoys of the lower ond of tho river and tho channel outwards to tho odgo of the surf. Soundings were taken the whole distance, and the least depth of water found was six foot, tho greatest bomg round tho point of tho North Spit, whore bottom could not. bo found at twelve feot.
