(t. W. Binney and Co. report, since their last:— Sales by auction have been limited, but goods offered have realized much better prices. There is a demand for good butter, bacon, and hams ; full weight candles sell readily and command good prices. Several public-houses have changed hands. The Ovens Hotel, in Revell-street, was disposed of foi\£32o, which, considering the competition in the trade, was a fair value. The Albion Hotel and the Old House at Home were both offered, but not sold, the proprietors not being disposed to sacrifice. The latter has since been sold privately. A butcher's shop in Revell-street sold for £25. The Ulster Hotel, on Gibson's Qnay, with a frontage of 16Jft. by a depth of 165 ft., after a spirited competition, was declared the property of Mr Greer, at £230. Messhs Wilson Burnelii and Co., report that for some weeks past the wholesale price of cattle has been lower than ever known on the Coast, and dealers have generally submittedat once, ai several heavy mobs had been crowded into the market at one time. Little, if any profit, can have been made out of late lots overland, the prices frequently, obtained here being lower than those given on the other side of the ranges. -Few cattle have been sold by auction, the most direct means of ascertaining value, but the price has varied according to quality from 8d to lid per lb. The market is now extremely bare of cattie with not many on the road, and we anticipate a rise which will last for some time. Tnerehave been comparatively few arrivals of sheep by sea, most of the steamers from Nelson calling' at the Grey, have made there a better market than could be obtained here. Some remarkably good sheep have been driven overland, and found a ready market. Perhaps it is fair to state that they were under the charge of Mr Griffiths, who al©ng with Mr Browning discovered the pass which bears the latter gentleman's name We have sold several small lots to arrive, guaranteeing weights and quality, and find a trade of that kind increasing. There is a very marked increase in the consumption of mutton, and the market is, now abiolutoly bare. Tufting; everything

of all kinds of meat, with an increasing population, and the gradual scarcity of fat cattle on the other side, we look forward to a certain rise in prices.

Messrs. R. Rebvbs and Co. report :-rA marked improvement has taken place in our market this last month, and for most staples better prices have been obtained, horse feed and flour excepted. We have held several large sales of merchandise during the month, and with few exceptions most lines were quitted at satisfactory figures to importers. The news from our goldfields continues to be of a most satisfactory nature: The various rushes to the South are all giving good results. To Okarita we have been able to send large parcels of goods, and this outlet has in a great measure relieved us of surplus stocks. The scarcity of ham and bacon still continues, and first brands could be now placed at 2s 2d. Butter is beginning to assume a better tone, and good quality getting in short supply. Oats, hay> and chaff in excessive supply, and as a natural consequence holders got to submit to reduced rates. Bran in fair demand at 3s. per bushel. Bulk aud bottled stout still continues in good request for good brands. There has been a little more enquiry for bottled ale, but bulk seems to be altogether neglected. Wine and spirits in fair request, but shippers should bear in mind that none but first brands will sell in this market ; in fact, this remark will apply to all goods. Flour has rapidly reduced in value in consequence of recent advices from Australia. Oilmans stores and preserved fish all in good demand at remunerative prices.
