CORONER'S INQUEST.
( hi Saturday last an inquest was held at the Golden Ago Hotel, Kanieri township, on the body of the unfortunate man who, in our last issue wo informed the public had been found dead in a drivo on the Kanieri diggings. Andrew Moore gave evidonce to the offeot that ho was a mate of tho deceased, whose namo was Robert Lathanguc, a native of London. Ho had been working with the deceased during tho past fivo mouths, and had frequently heard him complain of boing troubled with pains in his back. On Friday last, accompanied by another man named Magnus Wartcrson, they went to their work as usual, tho deceased going down ono shaft, witness down another, Wartorson remaining on tho surfaco to attend upon both. On roturniug to thoir work aftor dinner deceased appeared in his usual health. Towards six p.m. Waterson called witness telling him it was knock-off timo, and that ho was going homo to get supper ready, at the same timo requesting him to call deceased. Whon ho camo up ho wont tp tho othor 6haft aud called him throo times, but received no answer. Ho then went down to aco if anything was wrong, and there found tho deceased lyiug in tho drive with his head towards tho shaft, in such a position as inducod him to supposo ho was in tho act of coming out when he fell. A candle was burning beside him. Witness was unable to lift him, and although the body was quito warm ho could not say whether life was quite extinct or not. Ho was too much exoited at the time to notioo it. Finding ho could d« nothing by himself, witness returned to tho surface and called tho men in tho adjoining claim, tolling thorn that ho feared his mate was dead. A doctor was at onco sent for, aud the body removed to the surface. They bathed the head with cold water, and used other simple means to restore animation, but without avail, he was apparently quite dead.
By tho Coroner — The drive is well ventilated, there was no foul air in it. The ground wo were working isveiy poor. Tho deceased was quito able to do his share of the work.
• Magnus Waterson, being sworn, corroborated the evidence of tho last witness ; he stated that he had seen deceased alive at 2 o'clock, being then in the drive, helping him to timber it. lie appeared in better spirits than usual. Witness never saw him alive afterwards.
Shadforth Anderson deposed that he was a properly qualified medical man, residing at the Kanieri. He had made a post-mortem examination of the body, and on opening it found both lungs much diseased. They must .have been so for some years. * The heart was much enlarged, and the wall of the. left ventricle had burst. Tho thorax was filled with blood. The stomach was healthy. Witness believed that death was caused by tho rupture of the left ventricle of the heart.
Tho Jury, after a few moments' consideration, returned a verdict that deceased had died by the visitation of God.
