Friday, Feb. 9. The London Chartered Bank again makes advances tq Government without requiring confessions of judgment, but anticipating the immediate passing of the Appropriation Bill.
Mr Verdon gives a Ministerial dinner at Williamstown to-night. The Duke of St. Albans (travelling incog,), and Sir Frederick Johnston, arrived by the Erl King. They proceeded on to Sydney,
The steamer Victoria has gone to make a careful survey, under Captain Cox, of the entrance to the Bay, A monument to the late Dr. Thomson is to be erected in Geelong.
The Governor has written to the Chief Secretary, giving his version of an interview with" Mr Macmillan.
Markets. --Breadstuff's are prostrate. Adelaide country flair, .£2l to £22 per ton j Californian, £20 per ton ; fine Chilian, Ll7 to LlB per ton ; market falling. Victorian wheat, 7s 6d per bushel ; Adelaide, 8s 6d per bushel ; Californian, rather under Bs. per bushel. Weather, still hot. A large ship is reported off Cape Otway, name unknown.

Breadstuff's still falling. Victorian « wheat. 7s. 3d. to 7s. 9d. Japan wheat cleared at 7s. 9d.
Saucel whiskey 9s. No political news. AsßivifD, — Wellesly Wednesday, Feby. 14. Mr Lalor has been elected Chairman of. Committees without opposition. The'case of Bruce v. the Queen is to be finished before one Judge, so as not to derange the circuits. In Dallimore v. the Queen, the Privy Council has decided in favor of the Queen, reversing the decision of the Supreme Court.
It is rumoured that the Governor has been recalled, and Sir William Denison appointed.
It is proposed to make the Melbourne Bank a joint stock bank, to do general banking business An association has been forced to take care of the registrations in the free-trade interest.
In the import market, business is languid.
Adelaide flour is quoted at £20 to £21, according to quality. Wheat is steadier, with more inclination to do business ; 7s. 3d., has been refused for Port Macdonnell. Maize is heavy, at ss. 6d. Oats lower ; prices 4s. 6d. to ss. Bran is easier, Is. 7d. to Is. Bd. Salt is firmer, stocks light. " Low medium teas, Is. sd. Byass' beer, in bond, is difficult to get. Hops, to land, 2s. Advices favorable.
Tobacco shipments from New York are light. Four vessels sailed thence for Melbourne. The Lady Bowen was loading for Sydney ;' Veritas on the berth for Melbourne.
Java advices to 31st ultimo- report the Japan Packet as loading for Sydney, with sugar and rice ; arid. Douglas loading for Melbourne. The brig Aray, from Valparaiso, had sailed from Batavia for Sydney,' with original cargo.

A motion has been passed in the Assembly affirming the desirability of providing for the remission of rent (o certain pastoral leases.
A select committee was appointed to consider the question of an amendment of the Constitution Act.
A farewell dinner was given to Bishop Short last night. He leaves next week for England. An inquiry is to be made into the working of the Real Property Office. Forrester, an innkeeper at Gilberton, was stabbed to the heart by a shoemaker named M'Donald. He died instantly. . Corn market quiet to-day. One sale of wheat at 7s. lOd. Flour nominally Ll9 to L2O.
Wednesday, Feb. 14. The Ellen Lewis, barque,, arrived
from Adam Bay, northern territory, with r- Lieutenant - Colonel Finniss (Government resident), his son, and 39 passengers. She arrived at Escape Cliffs on the sth November, with M'Kinlay and party, in good health. The utmost confusion prevailed on her arrival, and but for the officers the place would have been abandoned. On examination, pplendid country has, been (Uncovered
south-west of hscape Cliffs, and new site commenced. Several of the party suffered severely from scurvy. The appeal in the great Moonta case (the Queen v Hughes and Stirling) has been argued before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and judgment is to be delivered in February. There are no transactions in wheat or flour ; buyers of wheat offer 7s. 3d., holders ask 7s. 6d. Cape barley, ss. 9d. to 6s. White oats, 6s. to 6s. 6d. There is not any important news either by the Japan or Danube.
