An excellent opportunity is afforded to those desirous of sending goo.ls to any part of the coast— the smart cutter Ellen, 50 tons burden, beiug open for freight or charter. Particulars can be obtained of her agents, Messrs. Bain, Houghton and Co., Wharf-street.

Those desirous of either proceeding themBelves, or sending goods to tho Buller, will be enabled to do so shortly, is tho William Miskin will call in there on her way to Dunedin, after leaving Hokitika. The Miskin is now hourly expected, and will sail forty-eight hours aftpr her arrival.

The s.s. Keera, which sailed yesterday morning for the Bluff and Dunedin, via Chalky Inlet, had amongst her passengers Captain Hodge, late roaster of the s.s. Star of iho South, who calls ut the inlet for the purpose of discharging the men, he left there in charge of the lattor vessel, and afterwards proceeds in the Keera to Duuedin. A considerable number of oinpty casks were sent down in her by the Messis. liullcn, to he used as aids in rendering the stern buoyant on her passage to that port. The vessel is to bo beached, and her middle compartment filled with them, and as they will displace an immenso amount of water, the desired end will be attained. We trust tho Star will reach her destination safely, and that tho speculation will provo a successful one to the gentlemen who have purchased her. Tho work of shipping, on boavd tho Davt, tho machinery and boiler onco belonging to the steam-tug SanißOii is proceeding steadily. All tho smaller pieces aro on boavd and tho mon are neiw busy in removing tho lavgo boilov from the placo it has so long occupied on tho sand, to tho hold of tho brigantino. This is a matter of no small difficulty, its weight being ■o enormous ; thoy havo, howovor, succeeded in getting it to within n fow foot of tho ship's side, and in the course of a day or two it is expected that sovonteon tons of iron will bo safely deposited uudor hatches.

From America to Europk in a Wkek. — It is stated that a company of the leading shipowners of New York havo under consideration plans for building four magnificent vessels of 8000 tons each, to be propelled by engine? of 2600 horse power, working two paddle-wheels of the usual kind and two screw propellers— so that in case of derangement of either set of machinery, tho other set shall continue working -without material impediment in the speed of the Tessel. These vessels are capable of carrying 2500 passengers, at tho variable fares of 2odols. B05»ls, and 75d015, according to the amount of accommodation required, between that city and Bristol, England. Meals are to be furnished on board the same as at any restaurant, and passengers can either eat or let it alone, as it may please them. The passage to Europe, it is believed, at eighteen miles an hour, will be made in seven days, while the great length of tho vessels (nearly 6(iO feet) will overreach or materially control the waves, aud prevent that terrible pitching motion that is more or less tho dread of all sea-going travellers. — American Paper. Grbat Ookan Race —The celebrated China' clipper ships Fiery Cross, 680 tons, Captain Robinson, and the Serica, 70S tons, Captain G. Inneß, from Foochoofoo, have arrived in London, having on board tho first teas of the season. Many of our readers may not be aware that each year every -effort is put forth by shipbuilders, shipowners, and others engaged in the China trade, in order to produce and sail ships out and home as speedily as possible, a premium ranging as high as Ll per ton being paid by the merchants engaged in the tea trade to the owner of the ship arriving with the first of the season's teas. This year more than ordinary interest was centred In the arrival of the first ship, from the fact of two of the fastest vessels engaged in the trade having left Foochoofoo together, the same tug having towed them both to sea and cast them off at the same time in the China Bea. On June 23, the Sorica passed the Straits of Sundy, 27 days out, and on the' following day tho Fiery Gross passed the same straits, being 28 days out. The sailing qualities of tho Serica arc reported as being superior in strong winds and heavy weather ; the Fiery Cross, on tho other hand, excelling in light weather. Nothing again wns heard of the ships until Saturday, when both vessels arrived off tho Isle of Wight almost simultaneously. By a'btroke of good fortune, how<ver, a tug steamer ran alongfcido the Fiery Cross, and, having taken her iv tow, reached Gravesend same tide. No other tug being in the vicinity, the Sorica stood out to raid-channel, in order to catch the flood tido, but did not gut to see a steamer until she got to tho Foreland, and in consequence lost the tide. Had the Scric.i been fortunate enough to have fallen in with the tug sent out to bring her in from Iho Isle of Wight all would have been well, as both ships would havo gone up the Thames together. As it was, howover, tho Fiery Cross got up first, and thus secured the premium. The voyage from Foo-choo-foo is about 25,000 miles ; and when it iv romombered that thesd two vemoU loft upon tho Bfimo day, üm! nr> rived |n tight of Knglnnd tflov ounli a long VWW t9g«tl»W tlie vlgtyty tv M<V Vk\)' Vm

in reaching London iirat.. Is small indeed ; in fact, the merchants might safely deolare fcho i ace to he a "dead heat," and divide the premium. The Fiery Cross is owned by Messrs Finlay and Co, Glasgow. The voyage from Foi choo-foo to London occupied 106 days.
