The Melbourne Herald of the 3rd instant, reports : —
Business, in the import market opened out very quietly this morning, inul in fact it is scarcely Anticipated that any considerable improvement will lake place until after the closo of the present week. Quotations for brtiulstuffs remain unaltered. During llio day transactions to a moderate amount have trans* phed, but generally there is nu indisposition (o give the nitos asked, which are — for best brands of Adelaide flour, L 24 to L 2110.5; Chilian wheat, 9s Gd and a trifle moro ; Soulh Australian, 9s Od to 9s lOd. _ A parcel of about 10 quarters of spirits of wine has changed hands at a prico fully supporting the late quotations. The attention of merchants is directed to an important notico in reference to Friday next, given below, The following is from the Argus of the Ist :— The week anil year have closed in the import markets without the transactions of- the day having added much more to the business of the week than has already been reported. Wo hoar of a shipment of Edmonds.' pig brand of bottled stout, now in thobay, having been placed at 11s Pig iron continues (o be enquired for, and sales of parcels newly arrived, are now pending. In bread-stuffs, though prices are stiffening, there is do dscided alteration to note Adelaide flour commands L 23 to L2l loa. Trade sales of Chillian wheat are made at 9 s Od. Wo understand that for tho Othello's California)! wheat 10s is required by tho consignees. No sales have yet taken place. Advices by tho Sarah, from Mauritius, are likely to cause the prices of Migars to harden, as the advance in the foroign market is such ts to increase the cost of sugars now loading fully L 2 10s over that of previous shipmentis. l
