Large Crowd Attends Christmas Festivities HUNTERVILLE, Last Kight (OC). Bright sunshine favoured the Christmas festivities held last Friday afternoon under the auspices of the Hunterville Chamber of Commerce. A of people thronged Bruce Street amid a carnival atmosphere. There were many entries in the children's competitions for decorated bicycles, prams, tricycles and trolleys, which showed originality and artistic arrangement and were a credit to the competitors. The winners of the various sections were as follows:—Bicycles: Girls, Barbara Aitken 1, Cushla Sextus 2, Robin Lewis 3. Boys, John Adkins 1, Ivan Aitken 2, Max Lewis 3. Prams, Jeanette Gillespie 1, Gwenyth Lewer 2, Chloe Sextus 3. Tricycles, Joy Lewer 1, Jennifer Aitken 2, Janice Snellgrove 3. Trolleys Ray Scott 1, Renton Hunger 2, Jeannie Rink 3.

After the judging had been completed the competitors, with their gay colours, fell in outside St. Andrew’s Church and, led by the Rangitikei Scots’ Pipe Band, marched to the railway crossing and then back to the Post Office, where they waited for the arrival of Father Christmas, who soon appeared on the scene and gathered the children around him in the traditional friendly manner and, with his helpers, handed out to his little friends, who numbered more than 500, gifts of balloons, lollies and ice cream. After spending some time with the children Father Christmas moved off and disappeared in the same mysterious way which accompanied his arrival. AEROBATIC DISPLAY. The aerobatic display arranged by the Hunterville Chamber of Commerce in connection with the Christmas carnival held last Friday afternoon proved a great success and attracted _ a large number of sightseers. The display opened the programme, and at one stage the planes were flying low ever Hunterville, dropping leaflets for the children to pick up. There was great excitement as the leaflets made their way to the ground for the young folks knew that among them were some lucky numbers, which carried good prizes. PICTURE MATINEE POPULAR.

The free picture matinee at St. James’ Theatre last Friday afternoon proved a most popular feature of the Chamber of Commerce festivities. The seating accommodation was taxed to capacity by children, which allowed parents freedom to do their Christmas shopping. PIPE BAND ON PARADE. A large number of people were attracted to Hunterville on Friday evening. The Rangitikei Scots’ Pipe Band was on parade and played in various parts of the town, adding to the carnival spirit. A considerable amount of late Christmas shopping was done amid the noise of squeakers, the throwing of confetti and giving and returning of the season's greetings. St. James’ Theatre had a capacity house and the dance held under the auspices of the Hunterville Tennis Club at the Scots’ Hall was well patronised. The carnival spirit prevailed in the town until a late hour. PERSONAL. At the last meeting of the board of directors of the Rata Dairy Company resolutions of sympathy were passed with the Raetihi Dairy Company in the loss of its chairman, Mr D. Scarrow the Cheltenham Dairy Company in the loss of its chairman, Mr J. L. Moir, and Mrs D. Rose, of Rata, in the loss of her husband. SACRED CONCERT. In spite of a very wet evening the Sacred concert held at the Town Hall on Sunday evening was well attended. Christmas hymns were sung by the combined church choirs and anthems and carols were sung by the Anglican and Presbyterian choirs. A nativity play was given by the children. Other items were— Songs, Mrs A. H. Rhodes, Mrs McConachy, Miss G. McKnight, Miss J. Simpson and Mr A. H. Sextus: pianoforte solos, Miss IT. Dalziell and Miss N. Harvey; violin solo, Miss P Hammond; recitation, Miss D Dalziell. The accompanists were Mrs D. Simpson, Mrs A. V. Carswell, Miss Bowick and Miss N. Harvey.
