Cargo Vessel Runs On Reef In Dash For Suva
SUVA: Dec 26.—The cargo vessel Ivor Jenny, previously reported on fire between Panama and Suva en route to New Zealand ports, is now reported ashore on the dangerous Horseshoe Reef approximately 100 miles from Suva. The vessel is on the exposed eastern side of the reef and is half-way on the reef, according to lhe reports of the Suva harbourmaster who flew over the wreck in a R.N.Z.A.F. Catalina at daybreak. Fire-fighting facilities were requested on arrival al. Suva and, if necessary, arrangements to beach the vessel. She struck at 2.30 a.m. at low tide. An effort made at 8 a.m. to refloat her was unsuccessful. Ano: her attempt will be made tonight at 8 o’clock. A Shell Company tug is proceeding to the scene with the harbourmaster. Horseshoe Reef is notoriously dangerous and the approach for salvage operations is most difficult. The weather is fine and the seas slight. Further conditions are expected lo be unsettled.
