SANDY'S CORNER

POWER FAILURE Due to a slight power failure on Sunday night, the broadcast of the Carols by Candlelight programme from the Wanganui Opera House, was interrupted. In broadcasting parlance: “Carols without even candle power!” PINCHED—A STONE! Scone Stone has been "pinched” from Westminster Abbey, and the theory the police have is that it has been taken by Scottish nationalists, who ha v e long threatened to establish it to Holyrood Palace. To Scots the Stone of Scone is the Stone of Destiny. It came originally from an ancient abbey at Scone, founded in 1115 by Alexander I. Long before that date, however, Scone was the centre of eccelesiatical activity and tlie seat of a monastery. Kenneth is alleged to have brought the Stone of Destiny, on which Celtic King's were crowned, from Dunstnffnage castle, on Loch Etlve, and deposited it in Scone. It was later removed by King Edward I to Westminster abbey, and Scotland has never forgiven the English. We can well imagine the Sassenach “doing his scone” now that the Stone of Scone has been pinched. It will make Lachie take more than salt with his porridge! CARNATION DAV! It was carnation day at our place yesterday. A railway friend of ours, who says that he \.as disappointed there was no ballot about the railway strike, but, like us, knows that the railwaymen had a very good case in regard to the increase in pay they have been asking for, sent us a bunch of red carnations —beauties! It was he who intended to send such a flower Up to what people are inclined to regard as “red" Auckland. We accepted the :.,.t, ir a: least Mum did, with becoming grace! The red is just the came as all the signal lamps along the way—no trains, and lamps show red, and the rails are getilng almost as red with rust. The first signal to show green will indicate tha. the : trike is at an end, but at the moment red carnations, red rails and red sign- is a-’ th? order ct the day. Thanks, 649! Hope she goes cn time when next she runs.
