Beaumaris Brilliantly Wins Auckland Cup; Personage Takes Railway Handicap Honours
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).—Carrying 9.3 and setting a New Zealand record of 3.20 for the two miles, the each-way favourite Beaumaris today won' the Auckland Cup, principal event on the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Beaumaris received a great
ovation from the crowd of 47,000 which attended at Ellerslie in fine , weather, and The Unicorn received similar recognition when he set a fresh New Zealand record of 1.34 3-5 for a mile when he won the Christmas Handicap. Personage won the Railway Handicap to complete the totalisator double, Beaumaris having won the first leg, and the dividend on the double was £69 Us 6d for £l. The totalisator handled £360,375 10s, including £52,039; 10s on the double, against £322,339 10s last Boxing Day.
