Wanganui-Owned Gay Gordon Wins Louisson Memorial At Awapuni In Thrilling Finish

(By

“Kestrel”)

Seconds favourite in the field of fourteen which lined up for the Louisson Memorial Handicap at Awapuni yesterday, when the Manawatu Racing Club’s* summer meeting was continued, the Wanganui-owned Gay Gordon scored*in a thrilling finish. This was the principal event

and the first leg of the double, the second of which went to the favourite, Anvil Song, the only other favourite to score being Oyama in the concluding event. Brilliantly fine weather ruled after two ’days of rain and the track was firm and fast. Though there was the usual large Boxing Day attendance the totalisator turnover showed a slight decrease, the amount handled being £102,439 10s, including £10,151; 10s on the double, as againnst £105,565: on Boxing Day last year. The ag- 1 gregate for the two days is £207,727 : 10s, compared with £207,413 last year.. When the Louisson Memorial Han- [ dicap field had gone two furlongs The Rip was setting the pace ahead of | Silverdine, Beau-Or, Dennis O'Kelly, ■ Voltaic, Ngarobi and Gay Gordon.; The field raced in close order along the back, with The Rip. Silverdine and j Beau-Or closely attended by Voltaic,! Dennis O’Kelly, Almora and Gay Gordon on the home turn. The leaders' spread across the course at the dis- 1 tance, where Silverdine and Voltaic were being challenged by Gay Gordon on the inner and Almora on the outside. In a thrilling finish Gay Gordon got up to win by a nose from Silverdine, with Voltaic only a head away, third. A length back was Almora, just in front of Royal Tan and Birdman, with Knight Templar, Beau-Or and The Rip next. Anvil Song shared the early lead in the Awapuni Handicap with Pictagain and Rhonddavale, but he soon ran clear and in the straight he held on well to win by a length from Lord Burford and Red Hero, who were well back on the home turn but finished very fast. Fleetwood was a good fourth, ahead of Lady Ella and Vive la France.

Ozami led all the way to win the Kelvin Handicap nicely from a comparative outsider in Sweepstake. Aberdeen came from a long way back to cut Hunting Fort out of third place, and then in close order came Beaute, Beau Bijou, and Nakura. Tranquil Gold, who trailed the leaders to the straight, failed to run on. Trusting stumbled and lost his rider near the half-mile.

Linkman was always well placed in the Palmerston North Hack Cup, in which Background and Übbriaco made the pace along the back, followed by Foxrelio at the half-mile, with The Pro making up leeway. Übbriaco and Background were still in front on the home turn, with Super Duke, The Pro, Linkman and Wave Crest challenging. The Pro was in the lead as they straightened up, but Linkman ran past him to win nicely by a length and pay a dividend of nearly a score. The Pro was a length and a half in front of an outsider in Parisian Lad, who held Wave Crest out of third 1 place. Next were Super Duke, Gen-1 eral Grant fend Military Chief. Paradise led always in the Appren-I tices’ Hack and drew away in the | straight to be three lengths clear at the finish. There was a great go for the minor placings and -the camera showed Glenkindie second a nose in front of Hadfield, which finished fast to beat Auf Wiedersehen by a nose. Parrworth was fifth. In the Jumpers’ Flat the issue was in doubt right to the post. New Deer, which had set the pace, led into the straight from Follow Suit, Hypholin and Vadoz well clear of the others. Then Follow Suit tackled New Deer and was in front inside the distance. New Deer, however, finished very solidly and won by a short head. The third horse, Hypholin, was three lengths away, followed by Vadoz and Roscarea. The order into the straight in the first division of the Trial Handicap was Oyama and Blue Sky from Double Paper, Petition, Ngatere and Lord Robert. Double Paper had charge at the and he won well by half a length from Lord Robert, which came home fast over a length in front of Blue Sky. Bonne Affaire was fourth. Blue Streak lost several lengths soon after the start of the second division. Seaford and Flying Agues led into the straight ahead of Lady Ecstatic, Gay Nina, Keechaka, Jock Scott, Croupier's Song and Opononi. In a good finish Seaford hung on well to win by the best part of a length from Flying Agnes. Then at neck intervals were Keechaka, Gay Nina and Jock Scott. Aureomycin was first choice for the two-year-old race, but he was a long way from the leaders as they turned for home and was beaten into fourth place. Papiro, Tony, Grenadier, Memories, Aureomycin and Lancaster was how they made the turn, and Papiro went on to win nicely from Lancaster, which went through with a fast run next the rails. Tony was home well for third, with Aureomycin and Memories following in close order. Details of results: — JUMPERS FLAT HANDICAP, (Of £400; 1| miles*. 5/s— New Deer, 11.1, W.
