SANSON NOTES

School Break-Up SANSON, Last Night (O.C.).—The annual break-up and prize giving ceremony of the Sanson School was held in the hall on Thursday night. The chairman of the Sanson School Committee (Mr. B. H. Riseley) welcomed the parents. Thanks were expressed to the head teacher (Mr J. W. Beattie) to the infant mistress (Miss Roberts) and to those who had given assistance to the school throughout the year. Mr. Riseley stated that residents were aware that the headmaster was retiring and wished both he and Mrs. Beattie all the best for the future. Sprays were presented to Mrs. Beattie, Miss Roberts and Mrs. Riseley, and buttonholes to Mr. Beattie and Mr. Riseley. During the evening items were given by the children. Prizes were then presented to the children by Mrs. Beattie the main awards for the year being:—Dux of School, Barbara Pedersen; special nature study prize, Graeme Harris; special sewing prize, Bronwyn Sanson. The challenge cup for essay work presented by the Sandon Old Boys’ Association and carrying a miniature cup for each year’s winner, was won by Robin Mitchell. In presenting the cup, Mr. C. E. J. Eglinton congratulated him for the essay on "The Aims and Objects of the Sandon Old Boys’ Association’’ which, he stated, was a particularly fine effort. The annual box opening and Christmas party given by the president of the Dr. Barnardo’s Homes Young Helpers League Branch (Mrs. A. K. Drew) was most enjoyable. Firstly the children were treated to icecreams, jellies and soft drinks. The boxes were later opened and together with the Christmas tree collections, amounted t 0 £l6 3s 9d. The highest individual box holders were Joan Bishop 16/1, Roger Henson 15/10, Robin Mitchell 14/3, Alwyn Matthews 14/6, Prudence Levin 12/10, Helen Matthews 11/5, Josephine Eglinton 12/11, while the remaining six collectors also did well, their combined boxes yielding £2 10s 4d. The secretary (Mr. J. W. Beattie) thanked Mr. and Mrs. Drew for their interest and also the children for their efforts in a great cause. The cancellation of cricket in the Rangitikei competition owing to wet weather on Saturday last resulted in the match Sanson v. Marton High School being drawn. Prisk 3 for 32; R. Harris 1 for 45; G. Golsbury 1 for 30; C. Hill 1 for 24. Sanson: C. Hill not out 16: B. Golsbury b. Green 7; S. Kent not out 2; extras 19; total (for 1 wkt.) 44. Messrs S. Twigge and V. Meyer returned at the week-end from a fishing trip to Taupo. The fishing is reported to be fair.
