TRACTOR FOR BOROUGH TAIHAPE, Last Night (OC).—The question of purchasing a tractor was discussed at Tuesday’s meeting of the Taihape Borough Council and Cr. S. Newson moved that the council take immediate steps to procure such a machine. The town clerk said he would obtain quotations and report to the February meeting. Cr. Newson agreed, and amended his motion to this effect. The motion was carried. STRAY DOGS. When Cr. Gordon told the council that two offenders had been prosecuted for allowing stock to wander at large and a conviction had been obtained in each case. Cr. Wilkinson suggested that stray dogs in the borough should be rounded up. ABATTOIR MANAGER. The town clerk stated that he had received four applicants for the position of abattoir manager. One applicant said he was prepared to stay for •ten yeai% / jft was also stated that the previous mimager was prepared to consider re-engagement if approached. The meeting was of the opinion that all annlications for the job should be in writing, and be considered on their merits. HOUSE numbers. When the question of whether the council or the individual householder should pay for the house numbers to be issued shortly, came up for discussion, the Mayor moved that the council defray the cost of the numbers. “It will cost the borough-about £lB 18s, which can be regarded as a Christmas present,” he said. The cost price of each number was 42>d, explained the town clerk. The Mayor’s motion was carried unanimously. WON’T SUPPLY CREAM. It was reported that two milk vendors were not prepared to supply cream on the grounds that it was uneconomical. One vendor said that his service cf supply was ten miles away and at the present price of cream it would mean operating at a loss. He added that he was prepared to deliver cream at Christmas and the New Year, even if it meant a financial loss. Another milk vendor advised that when his present source of supply was exhausted he was not prepared to provide cream on the score of expense. Cr. Gordon: They should apply to the Central Milk Council for permissino to increase the prices. MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS PARTY. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Mayor, Mr E. Loader, entertained members of the Borough Council and the staff, together with their wives and a few friends at a Christmas party when a short toast list was honoured 2nd supper was served. The principal tsast of the evening was the “Mayor ? nd Mayoress,” proposed by Cr Ashencen and honoured with enthusiasm, £ ocial items were contributed by members of the gathering.
