AUCKLAND’S GIANT CHRISTMAS TREE
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— Auckland s civic Christmas tree, a giant young pine 32ft. high, was erected at the apex of the Town Hall this afternoon. Surmounted by a silver replica o£ the Star of Bethlehem, the tree is decorated with festoons of tinsel paper, streamers and tiny multi-col-oured electric lamps, which will be switched on when darkness approaches. Two gargantuan Christmas “stockings” calculated to arouse the envy of members of the city's rising generation. will hang from the northern end of the hall on either side of the tree and dozens of dummy Christmas parcels fill the imitation stockings made from fish netting. The stockings are 10ft. in length, and each will be crammed with more than 100 packages. The parcels differ from .the usual Christmas package in only one respect. They are empty. Nevertheless, the Town Hall caretaker anticipates that he will be kept busy frightening off inquisitive young citiezns with cat-burglar intentions. A time, switch will control the lights on the Christmas tree t 0 ensure that electricity is not wasted. The tree will remain in position throughout the Christmas festival.
