Crippling Rail Strike In U.S. Brought To End
NEW YORK, Dee. 16 (Recd. 7pm). —The three-day railway strike ended in key centres today under pressure from President Truman, Federal courts and the union’s own officials. President Truman appealed to the men to return to work immediately in his broadcast to the nation last night.
More than 10,000 striking shuntingyard workers ended the transportation tie-up that seriously disrupted the movement of goods. Company representatives reported that there had been no progress in settling the wage issue which brought on the strike. It is believed union officials were advised that settlement of the dispute would come quickly if the strikers resumed work.
