DISTRICT HOTEL LICENCES REVIEWED

The application of John Patrick Fox for a renewal of the accommodation licence of the Tokaanu Hotel was granted by the Waimarino Licensing Committee sitting at Taihape on Thursday. Applicant was represented by Mr R. C. Ongley, who also appeared in support of the application of the manager of Chatean Tongariro (Mr L. S. Dennis) for a tourist house licence for the Chateau, which was also granted. Chas. Pearce Brown (Mr A. C. O’Connor) applied for a new licence for the Spa Hotel, Taupo. The application was granted. Thomas William Raymond Sherratt, who was represented by Mr A. C. O’Connor, applied for a renewal of hi s accommodation licence for the Rangitaiki Hotel. Mr O’Connor explained that tenders had been called for certain structural alterations and additions to this hotel but no tender had yet been received, and consequently no further progress had been made In the matter. The chairman, Mr A. Coleman, S.M., adjourned the application until the next sitting of the committee in March, remarking that a builder might tender for the j»: in the meantime. The application for a renewal of the licence of the Lake Hotel was also adjourned until the next sitting of the committee. This hoted was destroyed by fire a year ago and is at present operating a temporary bar. Mr A. C. O’Connor appeared for applicant. Associated with Mr Coleman, S.M., on the Bench were Messrs E. Loader (Taihape) and G. Goldfinch (Ohakune). The other members of the Licensing Committee were unavoidably absent. appointment of justices Taihape Justices of the Peace met at the Taihape Courthouse on Thursday morning to confer with Mr A. Coleman, S.M., on a new method of appointing justices of the peace. After a discussion lasting half an hour, a sub-committee was appointed to go into the matter. RUGBY CUP PRESENTED. At the Taihape D.H. School breakup ceremony on Thursday the Rugby Cup for the third grade one-round competition was presented to J. Bardell, cantain of the victorious High School team, bv the secretary the Taihape Rugby Sub-Union. Mr J. Kilgour, who anologised for the absence of the nresident, Mr A. H. Dean. In presenting the cun and extending congratulations to the High School team on its success, Mr Kil"our remarked that School had been beaten by Pirates four times in the chamnionshin series, but had turned tables in the one-round competition. He hoped tha* the boys would continue nlaying Rugbv The junior and third grade competitions were interesting, the only disannointing feature being the poor attendance of the public, but he honed that this wou’d be rectified next season. Tn conclusion. Mr paid tribute to the High School team’s coach. Mr A. K. Hamilton. TEACHER FAREWELLED. A member of the staff of the Taihape D.H. School, Mr M. Wheeler, who has accepted a position at Nelson Park School, Napier, was fare welled at a gathering of fellow members at a function held in the secondary department on Friday morning, when many tributes were paid to Mr Wheeler and regret was expressed at his impending departure. The headmaster, Mr C. A. Young, said Mr Wheeler had been on the staff for four years, and had been of great assistance both in and out of the school. The staff was sorry Mr Wheeler was leaving, but congratulated him on his promotion. Mr Young presented Mr Wheeler with a leather satchel on behalf of the staff and wished him “all the best.” Mr Young also thanked Mrs Anderson and Mrs Haydon for their assistance during the past year. Mr L. W. Burgess, first assistant, thanked Mr Wheeler for his co-oper-ation and said he had also been a tower of strength on the football held. Mr A. K. Hamilton congratulated Mr Wheeler on his promotion. Taihape had proved a good training ground. He wished Mr Wheeler well in his new school at Napier. Ihe speaker also thanked his staff in the secondary department and specially mentioned the assistance received from Mrs Anderson and Mrs Haydon. Mr J. Bowden wished Mr Wheeler “all the best” in his new job. Mr Wheeler said ho was sorry to be leaving Taihape and would always remember his association with its school. He would probably bo back to see how the new school was progressing, he said. PERSONAL. Mr R. C.
