SIGNIFICANT TALKS IN WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 (Recd. 11 pm)—The State Department has summoned the principal United States delegates to the United Nations, Mr Warren Austin and Mr Ernest Gross, to Washington for urgent consultations. An official statement referred to the United States Government’s desire to work as “closely as possible with the majority of the nations in the United Nations,” and a desire to inform delegates to a "current thinking in Washington.” As the Washington conference is being held, Mr. Lie conferred with Chiao Chen, second-ranking member of the Peking regime’s delegation and believed by many to be the "real brain’’ among the Chinese Commun-
Another significant happening was the consultation between the Soviet delegate, Mr Jacob Malik, and MrLie’s executive assistant, Mr. Andrew Cordier. It is understood that the Indian delegation will continue to sound out the Chinese Communist representatives on the possibility of ceasefire or truce to stabilise the battlefront pending negotiations. India’s viewpoint is that no fruitful negotiations can be conducted as long as the political scene is overshadowed by the rapidly-changing military balance.
