Here’s a Hint. Home-knitted garments are usually assembled with the same kind of wool as the garment. When the time comes for it to be unpicked, as it usually does, knitted stitches are then invariably clipped by mistake. This will not occur if the garment is machined together with silk or mercerised cotton to match, using a long stitch. The result is a neat join, and the machine thread can easily be unpicked without damaging the wool. Business And Professional Women’s Club Miss M. I. Allomes presided at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Business and Professional Women's Club recently. A review of the meetings held during the year was given, special reference being made to the ‘get together” of North Island clubs at Wanganui from September 23 to 24. Letters since received from members of the visiting clubs had shown how much they appreciated their visit to Wanganui, Miss Allomes said. Congratulations were extended to Miss M. Sewell on her election as a vice-president of the Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs of New Zealand. This year Wanganui was responsible for the editing of "Te Ara,” the journal of the New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. The Misses M. E. Murch, H. J. Vine and M. Sewell were thanked for doing such a good job. Officers elected were: President, Miss D. Phillpotts; vicepresidents, Misses M. E. Murch, E. Feist and Allomes (ex officio); secretary, Miss J. Blair; treasurer, Miss P. Aiken; committee, Misses E. McKenzie, K. Bagge, I. Kendrick, E. Hardman, L. Parkes, D. McGregor and Allomes (ex official); ‘‘Te Ara” editorial committee, Misses H. J. Vine, Murch and Sewell. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SPIRAL PEAKS. A splendid gathering representing eight W.l.’s assembled in St. John’s Parish Hall, Ohakune, for the halfyearly meeting held early in November, Mrs Austin, president of Mountain View Women’s Institute, opened the meeting. This was followed by the Aspirations. It was decided to hold the next Spiral Peaks meeting at Raetihi on May 26, 1951. Mrs Becker, president of the Ruapehu Federation addressed the meeting and expressed pleasure at there being such a splendid gathering and congratulated Mountain View on their excellent display of arts and crafts. The roll call ‘‘What I saw on my way here” proved humorous ajid varied, ranging from cows to pot holes, flowers and babies. After the luncheon adjournment, the meeting opened with the ‘‘Ode to Fellowship,” followed immediately by an item from each W.I. Then came the demonstrations, each W.I. giving a practical insight into whatever class of craftmanship they demonstrated. Paris models were in evidence in the competition for cellophane hats. Winners of competitions were: —Cellophane hats, Mrs Collins 1, Mrs Lenden 2, Mrs Barclay 3. Paper flowers, Mrs Powell 1, Mrs McDonald 2, Mrs Hall 3. Machine poker work, Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Mitchell 2, Mrs Bauzen 3. Knitting needle poker work, Mrs Sommerville 1, Mrs Thorsen 2, Mrs Morrow 3. Cooking, Mrs Sommerville 1, Mrs Bergerson 2, Mrs Wright 3. Afternon tea brought to a close a day full of interest, members realising just how much can be gained from getting together occasionally and exchanging ideas and seeing the other persons point of view. The floral sprays presented to all visiting officebearers were the work of Mrs. J. Deadman and were greatly admired. Second Round Played For Inter-Club Croquet Shield Play for the inter-club croquet shield was continued in Wanganui on Saturday. Results of the second round were:— Mrs N. Lynch (Gonville) 26, beat J H. Peters (Wanganui East), 24; Mrs Owles (Gonville) 26, beat Mrs McDougal (Wanganui East), 19. Mrs Rowe (Durie Hill) 24, lost to Mrs Trussell (Aramoho), 26; Mrs Armstrong (Durie Hill) 26, beat Mrs Stevenson (Aramoho), 19. Wanganui East had the bye in that round. Points to date are: Durie Hill 102. Gonville 95, Wanganui 85, Wanganui East 48. Aramoho 45. The draw for the third round is: Wanganui East v. Durie Hill, at Durie Hill; Wanganui v. Aramoho, at Aramoho, Gonville a bye.
