TRANSPORT FOR ELECTIONS. Candidates for tomorrow’s local tody elections have co-operated in arranging a transport service for the 'benefit of the electors. The service will operate from 1 pm. to 7 p.m., and voters desiring transport to and from the polling booth should ’phone No. 293. It is the duty of all electors to record their votes. Little interest has been shown in the elections so far but it is hoped that all traces of I apathy will be cast aside on election iday to elect the seven members reiquired on the Borough Council and I one representative on the Wanganui 1 Hospital Board. Over 1000 people should vote tomorrow. There are nearly 1400 names on the roll. COMING SPORTS MEETINGS. Horse events will be included in the programmes of various sports clubs in the district who will be holding their annual gatherings shortly. The Taihape Horse Sports Association, which controls horse events at these sports, has approved of the following dates: Tiriraukawa, January 6; Kawhatau, January 13; Mangaweka, January 20; Puksokahu, January 22; Rangiwaea, January 27; Moawhango, February 3; A. and P. Association, February 11; Papanui, February 17; St. Pat’s. March 17; Mataroa, March 24; Omatane, April 7 (Easter Saturday). GENERAL NEWS. Prize-winners at the weekly railI way euchre party on Tuesday were as follows: —Women, Mrs Annis 1, Mrs Griffen 2, Mrs V. Evans, consolation. Men, Messrs McSweenev. Atkincon and W. Duffy (equal) 1, Mr E. Quigley, consolation. Dancing pupils of Mrs R. D. MacRae will appear at the Majestic cinema next Saturday and Monday in ballet and tap dancing items. The tinv tots will make their appearance on 'the stage at 10 a.m. tomorrow, and [the senior pupils will perform in the evening and also on Monday. DRUNKEN BRAWL AT WAIOURU Pushing one man through the wall of a building at Waiouru and chasing another with n broken bottle led to the appearance in the Taihape Magistrate’s Court of James Toko, labourer, aged 41 years, on a charge of behaving fri a disorderly manner while drunk in Pirongia Street, Waiouru, on November 15. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted and fined f 5. Messrs. N. Ashenden and V. Smith, J.P.’s, occupied the Bench. Sergeant L. Nicol prosecuted on behalf of the police. He said that Toko had been employed by a building construction company at Waiouru a'nd lived at the camp. On Tuesday night accused was involved in an argument with other men at the camp. He was drunk at the time and the other men were also under the influence of liquor. Eight soldiers were present. Accused’s employer tried to pe'rsuade him to leave what was in effect a drunken brawl, bu' Toko refused to go. Accused pushed one man through the wall of a building, and chased another with a broken bottle. The military and civil police were called in. and accused was arrested by Constable D. N. Ingram. He was a good work man but liquor seemed to be his downfall. He had been before the Court about 20 years ago for a similar offence. He had now lost his job. It was essential that b'rawls of this kind should be stopped, added the sergeant. FIRE SIREN TESTED The old 'ire siren was sounded yesterday morning (Wednesday) for testing purposes. It is proposed to procure a new motor for this siren in the hope that it will meet with the requirements of the Fire Brigade.
