Cricket Unlucky Start To England's Chase For Runs
| SYDNEY, Nov. 12 (Rec. 8 pm).— ( After scoring a chanceless and supremely confident 50, Cyril Washi brook fell to a brilliant catch in playing the last ball of the day in i the match between New South Wales and England yesterday. He and Hutton had taken England’s score to 92, wheta Morris, at silly leg, dived to hold a catch an inch or so from the .ground off Fred Johnston’s bowling. I It was an unlucky start for the ! visitors, who were just beginning a long chase for runs after New South Wales had declared at three for 509. The only wickets to fall in two days’ cricket are those of Moroney (23). Morris (168), Miller (214) and Washbrook (50). There can be only two conclusions: I’he writing is on the wall, especially in tests, for this weak English bowling side: and the lifeless wicket did not give the bowlers a chance.
Even the vaunted speed attack of Lindwall, Walker ano Davidson failed to produce dividends for Washbrook fell to a slow spin bowler and it was only his extreme caution in playing out the last over that cost him his wicket for England. Keith Miller’s 214 runs against th* Englishmen yesterday was his highest score in first-class cricket, but it knocked holes in his batting average. When he retired at 99 not out at the end of the first day’s play, he had an average of 501. Now, having got himself out in this match, his average is 308.
Miller’s scores in first-class matches this season are 201 not out, 63 and 138 not out, all against Queensland, and 214 against England. In the latest innings he hit three sixes and 15 fours. Only one batsman, T. J. E. Andrews (224) has scored more runs in a New South Wales innings against Englishmen. During Miller’s 311-minute batting session New South Wales put on 403 ; runs. In a second-wicket partnership I with Morris, 265 run? were added, I and his third-wicket stand with Jim | Burke yielded 138. Miller and Mor- ! ris scored 225 without being separ'ated against Queensland. When Morris was dismissed yesterI day these two batsmen e'nded an association that had produced 490 runs Scores : new south wales First Innings. Morris, c Hutton, b Bailey .
