Snap Vote Defeats N.S.W. Government

SYDNEY, Nov. 9 (Rec. 8 pm).— Amid dramatic scenes in the Legislative Assembly, the New South Wales Governme'nt was defeated by ose vote today on an Opposition motion to disallow increased railway fares and freights. Half an hour earlier the Government had survived, on the casting vote of the Speaker, a similar challenge aimed to reject increased tram and bus fares.

The Government was defeated in the second division because lhe Housing Minister, Mr. Kelly, had left the Hou'/e to receive medical treatmerit. The unendorsed Labour member, Mr. J. Geraghty, abstained from voting because he promised the electors he would not support fare increases while the toll on the Harbour Bridge remained. The Premier, Mr McGirr, is expected to move to rescind the Opposition motion later today. Rebuff Vote Rescinded: Casting Vote Of Speaker SYDNEY, Nov. 9 (Rec. 9.40 Later the Government, by a series of procedural manoeuvres, including five divisions an dtwo "gags,” succeeded on the casting vote of the Speaker, in rescinding the "rebuff” motion. The vote on the recision motion was 44 all before the Speaker cast nis vote fof the Government.
