Importation Of Bananas; Citrus Fruits Likely To Go Back To Merchants
PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Nov. 8 (PA). —The Minister of Marketing (Mr Holyoake), in the House of Representatives today told Mr Freer (Opp., Mt. Albert) that negotations are at present proceeding with the executive of the New Zealand Fruit and Produce Merchants and Auctioneers’ Federation on the question of transferring the importation of citrus fruits and bananas back to private enterprise.
Mr Osborne (Opp., Onehunga) asked whether any consultations had been held with the growers of Samoan bananas and Cook Islands oranges, and whether they were agreeable to that fruit trade being handed back to the “tender mercies” of the New Zealand merchants. He said that in his opinion it would be wrong for the Cook Islands produce to be handed back to the New Zealand merchants while the possibility of exploitation existed.
