BOWLING JOTTINGS
Hurn Cup Was “Restless” Last Season Congratulations to the newly-form-ed Gonville Women’s Bowling Club. It is another emphasis that this game is appealing to the women folk. Kapanui To Open. The Rapanui green is to open the season on Saturday and a special invitation has been extended to members, past and present, to intending members and visitors from other clubs. This used to be a very popular green in days gone by. Pennants. Senior and junior pennant fours got off to a good start on Saturday. The second round will be played on November 11. These competitions were inaugurated last season, by the Wanganui Centre to encourage a better standard of match play. It was contended that Wanganui bowling was slipping because it did not have players of good tournament type, and that too much club play did not tend to improve the standard of bowling. It was thought that keen inter-club play would improve the standard in just the same way as inter-club rivalry and competition improves other forms ot sport—cricket, tennis and rowing. Wanganui East proved the strongest club last season in senior and junior pennants, winning both competitions. This year there are 18 senior fours and 20 juniors. Each four will meet each other four m its respective section and then post-section play will start. The Hurn Cup. This bowling trophy had quite a trip round the clubs last season. Gonville lost to the Returned Services Club, playing the 13th successive challenge against the holders since Gonville had lifted the cup. Then Victoria took it from the R.S.A. Victoria staved oft Raetihi by holding that side to a draw, 20 all. Then Waitotara took the cup, defeating Victoria 28 to 13. Waitotara held Ruapehu at bay, winning 29 to 21, but Wanganui East won it from Waitotara 24 to 21. Then Ohakune came down the Parapara and took the cup I back with them to the tune of 27 to 13. But Gonville again got its hands on it before the season closed and beat Victoria and Feilding, challengers. Gonville retained the Hurn Cup last Tuesday against the R.S.A. The next challenge in is Waverley’s. Waitotara and Feiiaing have also challenged this season. Arnott Shield. A good deal of interest will attach to the Arnott Shield this year, a trophy given by Mr T. L. Arnott, ot Palmerston North, for competition between the bowling centres of Wanganui, Taranaki and Manawatu. Wanganui won the shield last year, the first year it was at stake. The matches between the three centres are in the nature of representative bowling. Each side has to select the strongest possible seven fours. The first match this season for the shield will be played at New Plymouth, between Wanganui and Taranaki In January. Last year the shield was first played for in Wanganui, when Taranaki won by five games to two. Manawatu then played Taranaki at New Plymouth and Manawatu won by a similar margin, five games to two. Then Wanganui played Manawatu at Palmerston North and won by six games to one.
