Duty Of Counsel To Help Accused Persons
PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Last Night (PA). Speaking in the debate on the Estimates in the House of Representatives tonight, Mr. F. Jones (Opp., St. Kilda) drew attention to a recent Wellington Court case in which the Chief Justice had criticised counsel for not accepting a brief to defend in a Higher Court a man for whom he had appeared in the Magistrate’s Court. Mr. Jones asked what might be done to remind members of the legal profession of their recognised obligations in regard to the defence of accused persons. The Ministers of Justice (Mr. Webb) said that one would need Io know ail the circumstances of the case referred to by the Chief Justice, hut the legal profession regarded itself as being under ;■ ..•oral obligation to carry a case through.
