Serious Charge Against Labourer

AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— Giving evidence in his defence in the Supreme Court today, Allan Percival Norwood, aged 35, labourer, said he had sought help for Mrs Beatrice Mary Leybourne after he had found her collapsed in her room. Norwood, who appeared before MrJustice Callan and a jury pleaded not guilty to a charge that on or about September 13 by unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure the abortion of Mrs Leybourne, he killed her, thereby committing manslaughter. Accused also denied charges or unlawfully using an instrument on Mrs. Lcjbourne with the intention of procuring a miscarriage, and of aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring her to use an instrument on herself. The charges arc alternative. The hearing began on Monday.
