WHANGAREI FORM AS ELLERSLIE POINTERS

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special) —Fireman went two very solid races at Whangarei, winning the Cup the first day and finishing second 24 hours Later. He was running on strongly each day and will be a fairly likely contender for the Alison Cup this week.

Stanfred was a very warm favourite for the Whangarei Cup. As was rather anticipated, it was the course more than the superiority of his opponents that defeated him. He was handily placed until half a mile from home, when some of the lightweights swarmed round him and he was crowded out. Stanfred should do better in the Alison Cup. Lone Star came home very well in the big event the second day at Whangarei, finishing fifth and only a length away from the winner, State Control. He carried 7.10 instead of 7.0, so he comes in favourably again in the Alison Cup unless more overweight is put up. Lone Star still has a failing in his races, that of drifting too far back early, but he does stay i well. With the well-backed State Control winning the principal handicap event on the second day at Whangarei the I doubles dividend seemed likely to be ! . very small with not many runners in I 'the second race and Prince Regent a j ' good prospect at what was certain to j be cramped odds. However, he did I not succeed and when Peter Boy ousted him from the major prize a big dividend was hoisted. This was Peter Boy s first win in the open class. On the other hand. Prince Regent may handle the Ellerslie track much bet • ter this week. With the two-year-old event at Ellerslie being run in two very full divisions, the leading northern youngsters, Brown Prince and Taj Mahal, will not clash, for they are in different divisions. Thus it seems certain that their next meeting will not eventuate until the Foal Stakes on Boxing Day. Both should win on Saturday.l Silver Robin was one of the out- I standing hacks at Whangarei and he ; went so well in scoring his double ■ that he will be hard to beat at Ellers- : lie on Saturday. He is engaged in ■ the two opening events. Quill was also a dual winner at Whangarei and she may go on now that she has commenced a winning career. However, maiden class form at Whangarei in the past has generally proved to be of not much account, although there have been a few exceptions. One of the exceptions seems certain to be Hidden Treasure, who ran away with her maiden division and then captured a limited hack handicap race on the second day. This filly has a lot of pace and it is probable that she will extend her winning record at Ellerslie this week. She ran three consecutive seconds in the maiden ranks prior to winning at Whangarei. The two-year-old Busiris has had only one race and that was when he finished second at Te Aroha a month ago to First Step. The latter won again at Ellerslie a fortnight, later. Busiris was to have gone to Trentham to contest the Wellesley Stakes, but he cultivated a cough and was left at home. His presence in the second division of the Cambria Handicap this week suggests that he has made a complete recovery, and in receipt of 101 b from the grey colt Taj Mahal he might make it. interesting. Rizzio looked well when he had his first race of the season at Avondale some weeks back. He is to have his next start at Ellerslie in the sprint. He will be opposed to the brilliant Gold Script, and both of these grand sprinters will be hard to heat. However, the three-year-olds Correspond and Barnsdale might come into the picture, plus the form horse Good Century.
